Yeah and you had to dial the phones. It took hours. It really sucked when you messed up a number and had to start over. And if the other person was already on the phone, their second line or call waiting line didn't ring. You got a busy signal and then had to start the manual dialing all over again. Could be minutes, could be hours. You had no way of knowing. Then once you finally got off the phone, you had to get up off the couch to turn on the tv and choose one of three channels.

Did anyone ever get selected by your teacher to make the "ditto" copies on the memeograph machine?

Did anyone else get "high" on the fumes from the ditto ink while running those copies?

This is what comes from being laid up at home with a sprained foot, and unable to walk today. OUCH!

rath, you summed it up well. I can still hear the sound after you dialed, and the "dialer" moved back into the correct position........after each number........
Why does this remind me of my father telling me how many miles he walked to school in the snow? Of course what I didn't realize until years later was he walked on plowed streets...lol

Anyone else have the mother who'd be screaming at you until the phone rang, at which point she turned back into Susie Sunshine? "Hellooooo?"

Jose - I worked in the theatre box office in college and even then we used a "ditto" machine. Definitely a "sense memory" recollection moment recalling that distinct odor.

Rolling the drum around

aaaaah.

The other day I had to describe to someone what it was like to type on a Royal manual typewriter (breaking fingers nails or having your fingers land between keys.) And throwing the carriage back instead of hitting return. I remember being so excited to use the IBM Selectrics in typing class with the autoreturn and the little ball that went back and forth.

The sound of typing class in full swing...

oh God, and how bout when a key would keep sticking and you'd have 15 "t's" or 15 question marks.

Remember when the new electric typewriters came out with "auto-correct"? That was like a dream come true...

Phones...

We had a party line for a while when I was growing up. You'd pick up the phone and hear another person's conversation.

Or, you'd be in the middle of talking to someone and hear another person click on and off indicating someone else wanted to use the line.

Remember the envy created by your co-worker, you know, the one who could master "White-Out."

Every document s/he produced was free of globs of that white stuff, and corrections, if there were any, were invisible to the eye.

Beacon - I thought about party lines this morning. We did not have one, but our neighbors had one.

How do you know the blonde's been at the computer?

There's white out on the screen.

I'm not so sure kids these days would get it.

Hey all !!! Sorry I wasn't around yesterday, but was running around all day. Can't wait tonight for Andrea !!!!
DRS is hysterical !!! Norbert Leo Butz gave the most hysterical performance I've seen in a long time. They also do a song about OKLAHOMA that I think was one of the funniest songs I've seen performed on a stage. Bongo and me couldn't stop laughing..and that was after an exhausting day at work. The entire cast was very talentd. It was wonderful seeing Sherrie Rene Scott back on stage again..it's been awhile since seeing her in AIDA....just love her !!!
