How do these people have the nerve?

Politicians or others who can go out in public and spew falsehoods or work con schemes to gain power and/or money - where do they find the nerve to do this without batting an eye? Don't they have consciences? Aren't they afraid of getting caught and being humiliated or prosecuted?

Maybe all this time I've underestimated what I could get away with and overestimated people and the law.

I suppose having a high profile or bank balance instead of being Joe Sixpack helps when the law comes around, though.
