Here I was trying to explain what fried okra is to one who has never stepped foot in the south. And I sucked at it! So my question is, how DOES one describe okra???
For some reason, this makes me laugh.

I think so too! My favorite restaurant in Atlanta is called Agnes and Murial's. They have the best damn fried okra in the world. It has a nice little hot sauce over that is not too spicy but just right. And I'm trying to explain it to her but she just kept getting more confused!
And the most random thread of the day goes to..............Chrys!

Um, greeny vegetabley stalky things that you put in soup and such?
I always thought okra seemed like skinny green peppers.
slimy, glutinous----not the fried version

Okra is a green seed pod, usually 3 to 4 inches in length. The mucilaginous inside is good for thickening gumbo. The faint of heart prefer it sliced and fried, but lots of southerners like me love it stewed with tomatoes (and highly seasoned), or boiled and slurped, slime and all. Not many vegetables are as equally hated and revered as okra.
I thought Okra was a very rich woman with her own talk show...
Tee hee.

Disgusting. I'm glad I don't have to deal with fried okra anymore now that I've moved out of South Carolina. :P

This is a funny thread. Okra is one of my favorite foods...but I have had trouble explaining it to outsiders..
Fried okra, done in the right way, is a delicious excuse to eat crispy, salty cornmeal bits deep-fried to perfection. The stuff under the cornmeal coating is secondary.

I tried it once. An unfortunately blind date experience at (good heavens) Cracker Barrel...it was icky (the okra)...and the date wasn't much better.
How many first dates have you had where the guy you just met wants to debate about sexual identity. I mean...how about a lighter topic before you try to get me happy and grope me in a parking lot.

I guess it is sort of like a pepper. I wish I would have thought of that. I kept saying "It has little seeds inside and the outside is fuzzy kind of like a peach." Oh dear.
