Personally, I find Halloween to be a rather awful practice. People go from door to door begging for candy dressed in over priced costumes. There are people in this country who are homeless, go to bed hungry and are in need of decent clothing. I often wish that the money that is over spent on Halloween would go to helping those in need.
Agreed...plus, seeing as how I have diabetes, I get sick if I eat candy. And somehow no one ever understands that and I get called a loser for not eating it.
Sorry.
Rant over.

I think Halloween kind of got worn out of me early because I used to dress twice a year- Purim is a dress-up holiday as well, at least in the states.
Anyway, I tend to resent the holidays that seem to have been half-invented by candy/greeting card/gift companies to extract yet more money from people.
Yes, Plum, I remember when the greeting card companies invented Grandparent's Day which annoyed the heck out of me because I always gave my grandparents cards and gifts on Mother's and Father's Day.
Halloween I don't like anymore because it was my dad's birthday and this is only the second one without him.
I never liked Halloween that much, b/c my mother would make me recycle whatever costume I used in my last show---and since she's a crazed health food person, never let me eat any candy.

Ngaahhhhh! Are you all mad? I will never be too old to dress as Roger DeBris and get candy from strangers.
I mean, really. If it bothers you that much that homeless people have no money, go and give them money. Complaining about it on a message board isn't going to help them at all.

Plum..........I really think that Purim is a fun holiday. This year, we are doing a Broadway Megillah reading. { I am writing the lyrics right now}Glad it hasnt gotten out of hand as Halloween has.
Halloween I can live with.

Ok.Please remind me in February to post an I DONT LIKE VALENTINE'S DAY thread. I also have issues with Bastille Day. { just kidding}
You won't need to post, Yenta. I'll have started my Valentine's Day rant looong before the day actually comes.
I LOVE Halloween - always have. When I was a little girl we always had a 'beggars night' on the night before Halloween. We got to wear our costumes on that night and we went around and collected pennies for charity. The next night was Halloween and that's when we went around for the candy. It was a wonderful holiday - and JUST FOR KIDS. Today it's adults who spend most of the time on it and I think they've kind of ruined it for the kids.
My math teacher was telling us about his halloween, and i wish i could have his experiences. I wish that the candy the neighbors give out was homemade and that we wouldnt have to worry about blades or poisons in them. I also wish it wasnt just about being greedy and getting 10 pounds of candy, but more about community bonding. Ok, im done wishing.
It is my opinion that Halloween and April Fools Day are the holidays for theatre people.
I hate Thanksgiving, New Years Eve, Valentine's Day, and Saint Patrick's Day.
Maybe it's just me.
I'm with you, FF, I hate too new years eve, valentine's day...

Mamie is right. Somewhere along the way it stopped being about the children (in my opinion it was the 1980s that did it).
When I was growing up we would go to people's houses and they would make a big deal over our costumes. In addition to candy, they would give us cider and doughnuts and my parents would spend ten minutes blabbing with the occupants of the house.

New Year's Eve is GREAT!!!!! The only way to celebrate it is by seeing a Broadway show, having a good dinner with friends and then watching the ball fall in Times Square. A truly festive evening if you ask me!

My favorite comedic line regarding a holiday:
"Ya know what is the best thing about Groundhog's Day?
The leftovers..."
Cracks me up every time.

I would imagine that the money spent for people to engage in dress up and fantasy (kind of like theater, no?) isn't but a drop in the bucket compared to the money spent on, say, invading and occupying a country under false pretenses. It might be worth just putting a little perspective on the matter.
"I wish that the candy the neighbors give out was homemade and that we wouldnt have to worry about blades or poisons in them."
Do a little research to find out how often that has actually happened. You'll be shocked, because somehow we've all had it drilled into us that this is a frequent phenomenon.
I love Halloween. I love the whole dressing-up thing. I find it fun.
