I Freaked Out My College Prof Today...

So, basically, our assignment was to create musique concrete pieces in which we piece together a collection of sounds to create a sort of soundscape or sound collage. If you're not familiar with this style of music, you may want to check it out. I think the most famous example of it is The Beatles' REVOLUTION 9.

Now some background: Music and sounds create images in my mind. I see things when I hear all types of music. This may be why I love musical theatre with my heart and soul so much. Maybe this was spurred by frequent viewings of FANTASIA as a young seedling.

So anyway, we're listening to the sound projects and after each one, we discuss and interpret them. Mine are always in the form of images and, at some points, I actually draw graphical representations of my interpretations of the sound projects. For example, one reminded me of "chainsaw killers in outer space". Another reminded me of "what would happen if the stock market were to crash today, in the Information Age?"

And yet another (and this was the one that did it) one painted the clearest image in my head. I got the image of a man attempting to blockade his house from a hurricane (Boarding up the windows, putting away lawn furniture, etc.) but WHILE the hurricane was going on. He forgot to do it beforehand. So the storm is getting worse and worse (Represented by a pounding beat in the sound project) and the roof starts leaking (Water on the soundtrack).

Now, my professor is a 32 year old visual artist who pretty much sees things in a similar way that I do. For example, he, too, is a fan of Jim Jarmusch's DEAD MAN, a movie that most hate and I would believe would not find many fans on this board.

So, as I'm telling him my interpretation, he starts laughing his ass off and explodes, saying "WHAT THE F*CK?!?"

Hilarious, it was.
