If most of those who lived in New Orleans have relocated & will stay where they are now, who will inhabit New Oreans after it is rebuilt?

Between rebuilding the city & the levees, there should be many jobs available for those who want them after it is dried out & everything is sorted out

And how long is that supposed to take?

God only knows but what happens to the city if a majority decide not to return ?

I don't know...
it's a good question, but my guess is this won't be for a long time. People have loads of time to sort of decide.

And you're right, chances are most of the population won't return. It's really horror what they're going or have already gone through.

I suppose people in need for a job will go..but what about those with jobs still there? They might have no choice but to stay.

God that's so awful. I never visited New Orleans but it was always a dream of mine. So beautiful judging by the pictures.

I heard on the news tonight that they're trying to query local businesses to find out who plans to reopen and who doesn't, and what it would take for them to stay. I don't think anyone wants to see New Orleans wind up as a ghost town. A friend of mine said recently, "If the French Quarter survives, New Orleans will rise again." Hopefully, it will be true. Maybe not quickly, though. However, those staying in the area to rebuild will need local services themselves, so the infra-structure will have to be first.

This isn't the first hurricane to hit New Orleans. It'll be rebuilt only to be destroyed again.

Kinda like San Francisco.. It survives all the earthquakes, only to be hit again.

New Orleans is those people's homes. They'll come back. They'll rebuild. It has their history and their future. No one, and nothing, can take that away.

It's just part of the history books.

Let's look at the scenario. The first reconstruction contract has already been awarded to Kellogg, Brown & Root. The Halliburton subsidiary. (Who's surprised?)

W mentioned that Trent Lott's big beautiful house that was destroyed is going to be rebuilt and W can't wait to come back and see it because it's going to be "bigger and better." This is an important theme to remember.

W's mama said that things were working out well for the "underprivleged" people from New Orleans now relocated and living in the Houston Astrodome, and she said they're SO enjoying the hospitality of Texas that many of them "want to stay!" This is another important theme to remember.

What you're going to see is high end luxury condo-based reconstruction that is more of a Mardi-Gras themed upscale place than a legitimate city with its own indigenous culture. It really won't have room for 80% of the people who used to live there. There's far, far, far too much money to be made for them to reconstruct a tightly knit community of mostly poor people! This is the secondary benefit that is gained by sending the citizens of New Orleans all over the country.

This, in my opinion, is why people are refusing to leave. They know what's going to happen. This, in my opinion, is why the military will point guns at them to get them out.

So as one of the last places that hadn't been completely devoured by the same old Gapbercrombie&StarbuckBestBuy is soon to be reconstructed in a way that will be able to accommodate the mallification of New Orleans.

Keep an ear out for how many people of wealth repeat the mantra that New Orleans will be back, "bigger and better!"
