at the foot of the Ngong hills...
'Out Of Africa' is a gorgeous film with such beautiful dialogue. Anyone else love Streep, Redford, and Kitchen in this movie?

Hooray, Addy! I should've known!
"Will the air over the plain quiver with a color that I have had on, or the children invent a game in which my name is, or the full moon throw a shadow over the gravel of the drive that was like me, or will the eagles of the Ngong Hills look out for me?"

Posted: 7/17/06 at 4:14pmI now love this movie. When I first saw it I found it boring.

Moony, Redford is at his best in this movie. And Meryl is just purely brilliant.
The fact that it is the story of Karen Blixen is what originally drew me to it, as she was such a brilliant writer and true pioneer.
The scenery, the score, the story!
And Mozart.

Some of the BEST lines in any movie I've ever seen!
"I have learned a thing that you haven't. There are some things worth having but they come at a price and I want to be one of them."

Ah, yes, Glebby - that beautiful black shooting outfit with that fantastic hat with fur trim.
Doesn't she look stunning in the wedding outfit, too? And the other hat she wears for New Years with all her hair falling out in curls. Stunning. The costumes are beautiful.

"I had a compass from Denys. To steer by he said. But later it came to me that we navigated differently. Perhpas he knew, as I did not, that the earth was made round so that we would not see too far down the road."

Posted: 7/17/06 at 4:41pmI guess I should re-watch it. I was bored to tears when I first saw it.

Posted: 7/17/06 at 4:48pmDayDreamer, do give this film another go. I remember people I spoke to at the time feeling it was a long, slow film. But I never found that. I remember seeing it about three times in the first couple of weeks of opening. I loved the pace of it and just drinking in the beauty of the scenery and the wonderful story.

The pace is slow, to reflect the time and place.
But, the story and the powerful characters are so moving! Not to mention the breathtaking scenery and music.
I took the soundtrack on safari with me. It captured Africa perfectly.

Sounds like a plan for Friday night. (only night off before Hell Week)
I've discovered I appreciate movies differently now than I did back then.

Trivia - the scene when she is introduced to the staff (going slowly down the line in one take) is famous - Meryl had a HUGE HUGE HUGE bug crowling around on her chest, but wouldn't stop the take. As soon as 'cut' was called, she started screaming and hopping around all over the place to get it out. when it finally did, it was this 3 1/2-4" THING that scampered off into the grass.
And it's the only take they needed, and is what's in the film.
And anyone who doesn't think cinematography is an art form needs to be shown this film.
