His name is Anton Dolin and he was a popular Russian-trained ballet dancer in the 1920s and 30s. He also wrote books on the subject. He "lived" with fellow dancer John Gilpin, and was knighted in 1981. His imdb credits also intrigue.
He's so dreamy.

#2I have a crush on a dead ballerina.
Posted: 6/11/10 at 1:30pm"A ballerina (Italian for female dancer) is a title used to describe a principal female professional ballet dancer in a large company; the male equivalent to this title is danseur (French) or ballerino (Italian)."

I thought ballerina had more zing! But, yes he's an ex-danseur. Passed in 1983. He's temporarily taking up the place in my heart once reserved for Tommy Rall.

Then can you change the subject line? All told, it's pretty offensive.

I don't see how, but I don't want to incur the gay mafia's wrath.
That's him in the 1950s.
Does anyone else crush on long passed dancers?

It's pretty simple: feminizing gay men is a time-honored way of demeaning gay men (or those presumed to be gay).
He was also a not-bad writer and had a small part in the "Nijinsky" biopic from the 80s.
I love these photos!

Bless you, Q! I've been wondering on and off for MONTHS whether ballerino was an acceptable masculine form for ballerina. :3

Much the same way that "Divo" is supposed to be the masculine equivalent of the feminine "Diva".
And how many times have you heard of a (usually gay) male performer dismissively referred to as a "Diva?"

Posted: 6/11/10 at 8:00pmI expect "ballarino" is the literal translation but outside of Italy proper, I doubt you will ever find it used.

Posted: 6/11/10 at 9:00pmI don't know that I'd call it a crush, but I was OBSESSED with Nijinsky when I was in my early teens.

Reg: I see your point. I understand precision is taken extremely seriously when discussing dancing. Got it. Bravo!
Found a photo of Anton from between 1965 - 75. He aged quite gracefully.

Now I keep reading it as "dead dinosaur."
That's what I saw when I first glanced at it too, Reg. I thought, aren't all dinosaurs dead?

Good point, Stock.
Yes, he was a dapper old gent, wasn't he?

Posted: 6/13/10 at 5:53pmI have a crush on a (now) dead dancer: Gene Kelly. Although he wasn't dead when I first saw him and my little heart went "pit-a-pat". I think it was the "Chocolat" sequence in the American in Paris Ballet that did it.
