Astonishing and Glitter and Be Gay. What does everyone think? I know people say to stay away from something new, but so few people knew Little Women, and a few schools are in the UK, and they do not have a list of what not to sing. :)

I know you're probably a great singer, but please stay away from "Glitter and Be Gay" until you are in your mid 20s. You might be able to hit all the notes, but doing that song before your voice has developed can be dangerous, and you can end up with nodes.

I actually forgot, what are nodes? By the way, thanks for being so nice. :)

No problem. :)

Nodes are polyps found on the vocal folds, and are caused by misuse of the voice.

also, you should know that "candide" is on several schools' "please do not sing from..." list.

I don't know which schools, but the reason at some schools is that that piece of music is a monster to play for the accompanist, it takes a bit of work with the pianist to get it good. That is what happened at one of my voice competitions, a girl did it but the pianist could not play it perfect and it caused her to get off with the music and that caused problems and so on.....

Nodes are not polyps and polyps are not nodes. Before you post on a website that can be seen by a lot of people do not talk about things you know nothing of.
To the person asking the question- don't ask a bunch of strangers who have never heard you for their advice. They know as little (or less) than you do.
For everyone else- come on. You don't know anything. Don't give advice about things you don't know anything about. It's damaging and irresponsible.

First of all, it's really not that big of a deal. You could have just told me that what I've always learned was wrong, without being an arrogant asshole. I am a singer, not a vocal health specialist. That's what I've always been told and it's an official definition on a website I looked up. Nowhere did I claim that I knew it all. Nowhere did I say "This is the be-all-end-all definitition and no one can debate me". This is like you said, a public message board, people are for the most part, not professionals, and they get it wrong sometimes. She asked me a question and and I told her the best answer I knew. My only point was that they can damage your voice and you don't want to get them.

Come on, this board is FOR giving advice. You get a good general public opinion. Just don't take anything written as fact. And I believe that she's not stupid, she knows that.

amen, blair...i think if he wants to correct you, he should at least give us some information on what, for example, nodes really are.. if you're going to claim that you know more about these things, then don't tell her not to say anything if you're not going to at least give your advice.

chuck --

i posted saying that candide was on several schools' "please do not sing from..." lists.

how is that harmful? that is simple fact. it's not advice, it's not opinion, it's a small piece of potentially helpful information.

and born2c specifically asked in her intial post "what does everyone think?" which i consider to be asking for helpful information.

i- for one, come to this board for my most difficult questions about singing/acting/you name it. I have never met anyone here, but i take their opinion to heart, and trust they have a general understanding about just about anything that has to do with performing.

If you are going to correct someone, don't be a jerk about it, and if you're going to discourage someone from asking a question well then, whats the point of a message board anyway?

Why can't we all just get along?

and while we're all being nice here, i can now freely ask you

WHAT THE HECK IS 'RIFFING'? i've been dying to ask that on here but have been too scared. Now that i post this i'm scared that i'm going to get nailed for not searching or something

p.s. blair, before your post, i had no idea what a node was lol so thank you re: I have picked my audition songs for Colleges

this is a bad definition of riffing, BUT I'll attempt to say it. It's basically it's doing a bit of vocal gymnastics with a note, rather than just sustaining a single note... but on key, or well, sounding right with the music at least. It's just somethin to spice a certain note up. Since do you really like hearing held sustained notes all the time in a song? There are other type of things you can also do... but riffs are one of them.

There ya go... my lil definition... not the best, but tried.

And if I knew what nodes were, other than bad things that form on ya vocal chords or something from unhealthy singing, I'd tell everyone lol. But... I don't.
