I just saw the best movie!#0

It was about a couple that falls in love although it is forbidden. They are both married to other people, so they meet once a year for a secret tryst in a beautiful and romantic spot and have mad passionate sex, get caught up on each other’s lives, fight, make up, bemoan the fact that they can’t be together forever and always.
It was called SAME SEX, NEXT YEAR. The only thing missing was the love song by Johnny Mathis and Jane Olivor.
Give me a break.

Posted: 12/19/05 at 12:18amHow brave is Alan Alda to accept a role which deals with forbidden love?

Now, now now. Slow down here. I agree the movie drags a bit during the "Same Time, Next Year" portion, but there is a LOT to admire in Brokeback--some amazing performances and some truly powerful, heartbreaking emotional content.
It's all well and good to be glib, but this ain't Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn.

Posted: 12/19/05 at 1:05amI thought it was very well done. Why do people want to slam this film? SueleenGay, I respect your posts but would really like to know why this film hit you the wrong way.

It was beautifully shot and acted, but duller than dirt. I didn't care about the characters. Self pitying homos. They didn't change (until, perhaps the very end) and if it had been a straight couple (as in SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR) no one would care. If they say the movie isn't about the fact that they are gay (isn't that what they are saying?) then imagine a straight couple and ask yourself if this movie would have been made.
I am happy people are moved by it, and obviously to each his own, but I expected so much more. I think people are giving it a little more credit than it deserves because of its high profile cast and director and subject. I am happy they made it, I just wasn't moved. Sorry.

I'm sorry you felt that way, Sueleen, and perhaps this is in naivete, but if it were a straight couple, the relationship would not be so forbidden -- that's why nobody would care. Maybe one of the reasons people care about these characters aside from the fact that they are gay is because they aren't allowed to be together, and if we feel for them, we want them to be. I guess the fact that it's "forbidden love," to use a cliche -- to me, was a big distinction.
ETA -- I think it goes without saying, but often when I don't say for that reason I later wish I had -- not to say it's *okay* that their love is forbidden, at all, but that's just my two cents on the topic.
