I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

...maybe.

A little background:

In July 2004, in order to register to this website, I had to do a little something from my choice of a partner. So I signed up for Poetry.com, and I was required to send in a poem. So, I quickly sent in a four-line poem and registered.

Then, about a month later, I recieved a letter in the mail telling me that my poem was chosen as the poem of the month. Big hoopla.

In November, the four-line poem won the Editor's Choice Award and was eligible to win $32,000 dollars. I don't know if I won. (:))

In December, my poem was published in a book of 30 other poets. It was printed worldwide, and I recieved another award, the Silver Medal (kind of like the Pulitzer-Prize) for the four-line poem.

---

Now, in January, I just recieved a letter inviting me to a convention at none other than Walt Disney World! For three days, I'd meet Pulitzer-Prize winning poets, Florence Henderson, and many others, including The Marvelettes.

I would also recieve the Grand Silver Medal, become an honorary member of the International Society of Poets for 2005, an Outstanding Achievement in Poetry Silver Award Bowl, be awarded at 2 Gala Banquets and Award Ceremonies, go to over 20 seminars, and peform in Coffehouses, sunrise poetry readings, rap rooms, open microphone rooms, and workshops.

I am pumped up to go, but the only issue is money. My mother is a single parent, and my job doesn't pay enough to pay the overall fee of 2,000 dollars. Maybe I won't be able to go. I hate to beg for money, but if you can donate just a tiny bit (a dollar is helpful!) it would mean the world to me. It's not like I'd be spending the money on CD's or anything else, I just desperately want to be at this convention, as it will help me in the future.

Thanks for reading.

The overall fee of $2000???? It sounds to me as if you might be the victim of a scam. If I were you, I'd call the Better Business Bureau and see if this is on the up and up.

That's great advice, FindingNamo, but it's real. I've worked many many times with these people and met most of them personally.

When I say overall fee of $2000 (which, if that was the case, I would take your advice and call the BBB), let me explain. The convention itself is 700 dollars, but since I live in CA, I must pay for airfare, travel and the hotel.

Geez ...sorry PleaseChangeMe...but I spend all my hard earned money supporting all those 'mindless'shows that are all over Broadway...You know you called us 'Stupid Tourists'...As you now say you live in Ca...you have answered my question to you the other day as to how much of your money you spent supporting Broadway... re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

"As for GV being a rip off, its not if you know what you're expecting. If you want a show with a great story, see Little Women. GV is just mindless fun."

That's a problem. Broadway has too much mindless fun and not enough drama, or at least thoughtful fun. This needs to change, otherwise we'll get more stupid shows and tons more stupid tourists.

Wow, I had no idea I called all of you Stupid tourists! I am so sorry if I did, what I really meant was the GP. The unknowing. The "Hell, let's go out!" type. Sorry! :)

As for the poem, heres' the July one:

Anatomy of a Musical
-----
A musical reflects light and day.
Although performed never the same way.
Act one is kind, and sounds of lark,
Act two is always depressing and dark.

Here's the second one (I didn't mention this one) that I sent in:

1853
----
The year was 1853,
Commander Perry sailed across the sea.
He sailed to a land untouched by hand,
A land the natives called Japan.

The world around them was busy with change,
And many nations, were longing to exchange.
England, the States, Holland and France,
Did not want to miss this glorious chance.

But Japan was reluctant, Japan resisted.
The natives didn’t know other countries existed!
Reality was cold, and reality was furious,
But that’s not to say, Japan wasn’t curious.

And so began the invasion of Japan,
Until the nations settled with a plan.
Japan was forced to open their borders,
Obedient to the New World’s orders.

But that was over a hundred years ago,
And the countries today, still bask in aglow.
But Japan still keeps its ancient culture,
Resistant to a world of vultures.

And my last one (again, I didn't mention)

Chess and War
----
Moving a chess piece would be too hard,
The same goes with turning over a side of a card.
Saying “checkmate” is too easy a cop-out,
The world would laugh, without a reasonable doubt.

I could always move to the black or to the white,
But there is no way to reach toward the light.
So I suppose there is only one way to go,
To start a war, and set the fire aglow.

Rooks, kings, and puns may lose,
But I’m not ready to sing the blues.
I swear there must be a way to win,
I can’t go back to peace way back when.

I suppose I must continue fighting,
Maybe this game may be exciting.
It’s not like I wanted to start this war,
There wasn’t a way out, a few lines before.

But perhaps I had rushed a bit,
Maybe there was a way out of it.
No, no, we had to go to war,
I couldn’t take much pain anymore.

I know the rest of my pieces don’t agree,
They feel like I’m fighting alone, and they’re paying a fee.
That’s not true, we’re in it as one!
Right? Right? We can’t stop and run!

So thus begins an endless war,
Between two sides, three, maybe more.
My pieces will die, and I’ll continue to lead,
And until we stop, my country will bleed.

Again, I understand that there are more important things right now: Disaster Relief, personal needs, and I'm not saying that you have to donate. I'm just saying an open will call!

Thanks! :)

http://windpub.com/literary.scams/abc-nlp.htm This is from a 20/20 special. Sorry, it's a scam. You don't even have any rights over the poem. It's the property of Poetry.com and they can do whatever they want with it. I believe they can actually sue if you try to use it someplace else.

re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

That's very interesting, thank you for bringing that up! I'd almost believe that if I didn't actually get the published books. Wow, that sounded rude, sorry if it did!

EDIT: In fact, I did copyright the three poems before I sent them in. Does this still mean they can do whatever with it?

EDIT 2: Also, I wanted to know if someone else has already done this? And what happened? Thanks!

You had to register for a website? I don't remember doing that. haha

It is obviously a scam to pay 2,000 dollars. If you "won" then you should be paid or at least they should give you the money to go to Disney World.

re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

I didn't mean this as in BroadwayWorld, I meant 'this' as another site. Plus, I wouldn't be paying them 2000 dollars, it'd be 600, which is still a hefty price.

Still, thanks for all the help.

re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

They only publish you if you pay to get published or order the book. You are not going to believe 20/20? I'm sorry but I've had experience with this website in high school. It is a scam. My english teachers in college have warned our classes against them and my college paper even did an article on how much money they make off this scam. Luckily I never fell into their trap. You wouldn't believe some of the idiotic poems that my friend wrote making fun of each other that got the "semifinalist" notice. I can't stop you from going, but they are making a ton of money off this. It's not your typical scam, they are just vastly overcharging you for what you get.

re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

I had a feeling that was the deal, sonofagunn, thanks for digging the link up.

A little red flag went up for me when I read, "... and I recieved another award, the Silver Medal (kind of like the Pulitzer-Prize) for the four-line poem." Kind of like the Pulitzer Prize??

But the real big red flag went up for: "...and many others, including The Marvelettes." Though there are people who tour under the name The Marvellettes, there are no actual original members in the group, just three women who sing hits recorded and made famous by other people about 40 years ago.

I'd also be surprised to find out that there are very many coffee houses in Orlando for you to read your poetry. I have a funny feeling the whole thing will be a crushing disappointment if you do go. On the other hand, if you have a video camera you could make a documentary, and call it, "How I Was Exploited and Ripped Off By a Poetry Scam" or "Poetry.com 411" or something.

re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

I've also heard of this poetry.com and will say it's not unlike self publishing. They get a bunch of submissions, accept just about anything, then sell the books back to the authors (pretty expensive) who want it for vanity sake (not using vanity in a negative sense here). They also put it up on places like Amazon.com, etc to legitimize the offering.

Red flags:
Entry fee followed by a bio fee

paying for your award

Florence Henderson.... nevermind

re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

Yeah, I was published in H.S. too. I didn't have to pay at the time to be in the anthology, but the offer was extended to buy it... for some ridiculous fee of $50-100.

Just what I want is a book with 100 bits of juvenial iambic pentameter, and one or two serious efforts.

re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

So of course all this new info inspired me to start poking around poetry.com; I tried their poet search engine and entered the name of one of the greatest ever American poets, Robert Lowell... sure enough it took me to a poem by "a" Robert Lowell, just not "the" Robert Lowell. Unless of course Robert Lowell the great American poet wrote BKLYN-like power ballad poems:

"Friends"
If I could catch a rainbow
I would do it just for you,

And share with you its beauty
The days you're feeling blue....

It's probably not a big deal, but imagine my frustration after my second search yielded this message: "Your search for 'Emily Dickenson' was unsuccessful."

The press release-like page discussing the "symposium" that PleaseChangeMe would like donations to attend actually begins with the following lead:

"Orlando, FL -- The world's most interesting and dynamic poets will assemble in the Most Magical Place on Earth, the Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando...."

I'm sorry. There isn't a dynamic poet on Earth who'd really think that Disney World is THE most magical place on the planet.

Here's a link to the real Robert Lowell's masterpiece:

re: I'm Off To Walt Disney World!

There is a similar scam posing as a photography contest where you pay to receive a published copy of your "winning entry". Once you pay, your entry goes to the "next level of competition". If you don't order the book, you never hear from them again. From what I understand, it is the same company that owns poetry.com
