Posted: 12/22/12 at 4:58pmThe Ikea folks should have quickly ordered up a few thousand stuffed monkeys with shearling coats to sell at their stores.

The IKEA monkey's owner Yasmin Nakhuda staged a (failed) protest to get Darwin back. Said she:
"Unless you have owned a primate, you can't really understand my relationship with Darwin... He was not a dog, he was not a cat, he was a little person... Japanese macaques, they have 93 per cent human DNA. So, he would act like a little child, and therefore when I call him my son, I'm not mental."
"I [already] bought his Santa Claus and Christmas dress and his bow-tie for the New Year."

Meanwhile, The Guardian named Darwin the world's most fashionable pet in its year-end fashion review, beating out Karl Lagerfeld's spoiled kitty Choupette.

They apparently took the monkey (no word on the coat!) to a primate sanctuary and the owner is having to fight to get him back.

Posted: 12/23/12 at 11:43am^^The monkey was taken into the custody of animal control the day it was found running around the IKEA parking lot. It was subsequently sent to the sanctuary where the people there are experts in primate care. Owning any kind of monkey is against the by-laws of every Ontario municipality, with the exception of one which is quickly enacting their own. There's a reason that wild animals shouldn't be cared for by the general public who live in residential neighborhoods. It's sad that she's lost her pet but it was the right decision. Conventional wisdom in the legal community is that she will also lose the lawsuit she has launched against the sanctuary.

The thing with pets vs wild life is pets are raised to be pets.
That monkey, no matter how she's raised it, is meant to live in the wild.
