I've been watching it all afternoon on two DVDs, and it's crazy-boogaloo fun. NO, I don't remember the original airings! Uncle Twelvy's OLD, but he ain't THAT old. I was an infant at the time. But it's so much fun today to watch Donna McKechnie (see her on the photo, front and on the far left!) and Michael Bennett "pony" and "swim" and "twist" their way dancing around the big music stars of the day. So very cool.
I was particularly fascinated watching Michael Bennett "wriggling around" on the same set with the Supremes. Such a wonderful "If we could only see the future" moment. I was thinking about his "Dreamgirls" staging and vision, and I guess it hadn't hit me that he was THIS close to the actual source. He was THERE, baby, when it was happening! And Miss McKechnie and her "high hair" and "faux fall" is front and center for almost EVERY dance sequence. Not exactly a shock, when one thinks about it.
Petula Clark:
Where else can you watch Trini Lopez, Vicki Carr, The Four Seasons and Herman's Hermits sing show tunes from "The Sound of Music" and "My Fair Lady?" What a crazy medley THAT was! I just finished a show with Sammy Davis, Jr., The Surpremes, The Lovin' Spoonful and Sony & Cher.
For those of you who know this show... what do YOU think?? And for those of you who don't know it... check out the DVD releases (Vols. 1 and 2). Pretty great stuff!
