I'm obsessed with "Hullabaloo"

I've been watching it all afternoon on two DVDs, and it's crazy-boogaloo fun. NO, I don't remember the original airings! Uncle Twelvy's OLD, but he ain't THAT old. I was an infant at the time. But it's so much fun today to watch Donna McKechnie (see her on the photo, front and on the far left!) and Michael Bennett "pony" and "swim" and "twist" their way dancing around the big music stars of the day. So very cool.
I was particularly fascinated watching Michael Bennett "wriggling around" on the same set with the Supremes. Such a wonderful "If we could only see the future" moment. I was thinking about his "Dreamgirls" staging and vision, and I guess it hadn't hit me that he was THIS close to the actual source. He was THERE, baby, when it was happening! And Miss McKechnie and her "high hair" and "faux fall" is front and center for almost EVERY dance sequence. Not exactly a shock, when one thinks about it.
Petula Clark:
Where else can you watch Trini Lopez, Vicki Carr, The Four Seasons and Herman's Hermits sing show tunes from "The Sound of Music" and "My Fair Lady?" What a crazy medley THAT was! I just finished a show with Sammy Davis, Jr., The Surpremes, The Lovin' Spoonful and Sony & Cher.
For those of you who know this show... what do YOU think?? And for those of you who don't know it... check out the DVD releases (Vols. 1 and 2). Pretty great stuff!

Posted: 9/17/06 at 8:05pmWell, I DO remember the original airings - vividly! Choreographer was David Winter, who was A-rab in the film version of WEST SIDE STORY.

Posted: 9/17/06 at 8:36pmI remember it VERY well. Hullabaloo, Shindig, and Where the Action Is (in the afternoon) were mandatory viewing for teens for the few years they ran in the 60's.

Posted: 9/17/06 at 9:19pmThere was also Lloyd Thaxton, where his distinguishing feature was allowing the kids to lip-sync to hit records, then the rest voted (via applause), on who did it the best. We loved that part of his show.

Sorry, I nodded off for a sec.
What was the question??
NO, I didn't know Paul Revere personally. Or General Custer, or Marie Antoinette.

Wow - I'd forgotten about Lloyd Thaxton. That's where I first saw Sonny and Cher. The next month was Halloween and I managed to find the first pair of bell bottom pants in Northern Virginia to wear to a Halloween party. (My hair was already straight, dark, and down to my tush. Nobody who knows me now can believe it!) I was a smash.
Paul Revere and the Raiders used to show up regularly on Where the Action Is. In '66 my family drove cross country to California - very much like the Ricardos and Mertz's. We were somewhere in no-mans land between LA and Las Vegas when our car broke down. While waiting at a service station for it to be fixed, a van pulled in and out came Paul Revere, Mark Lindsey, and the rest of the guys! They were on their way to Vegas. I was 16 years old and was sure I was seeing a mirage on the desert. I wasn't - they were real and I was in heaven!

Exactly! That's where I first saw Sonny and Cher, as well. Remember how strange we thought they were? Also, Paul Revere and the Raiders were regulars on WHERE THE ACTION IS, which was on weekday afternoons.

Posted: 9/17/06 at 11:35pmOh hell...I'm old! I have somewhere deep in a box, in the storage room of my building, The Hullabaloo Dance Book...which shows you step by step how to do all those dances. And I knew everyone of them!
