I think I'm burning out

Do you see huge disparities in wealth and poverty on a daily basis where you live? I do and I'm finding myself increasing overwhelmed by it. Donations and time volunteered seem like a droplet in the ocean.

Maybe this is why so many are leaving.

re: I think I'm burning out

sorry, I had a mini-meltdown over the weekend.

Leaving the area where I live. It's hard to see one of the wealthiest counties in the country neighboring one of the most impoverished cities. It's like emotional whiplash. People shouldn't have to pick returnable bottles out of the trash for their income and the homeless population in the city is now larger than many small towns (~14,000).

Yawper, I see it a lot in NYC. But I'm guessing that's not where you live, based on your description of a wealthy county & impoverished city. NYC can be divided between wealth and poverty in a matter of blocks.

re: I think I'm burning out

I live west of Detroit. NYC has never bothered me because there really isn't the wealth segregation there is here. Back in its day Detroit was per capita the wealthiest city in the country, but now all the money has moved out of the city into the suburbs. You can see what used to be in what's left behind, fabulous architecture and places like the Institute of Arts (which is where I was when it really hit me).

There has been some improvement in the city over these last few years, but it's slow going and the attitude seems different. I'm afraid worship of the almighty dollar and fashionable fads is going to squeeze out the good people on whose backs the place was built. re: I think I'm burning out

re: I think I'm burning out

Yawper, I know it seems like no matter what you do, it won't help, but that's not true.

You could spend a few hours with someone less fortunate and it could change his/her life.

Also, if you look at it collectively the things people are doing are making an impact. I've been doing community service for many years now, and for the most part it's been with an organization that tries hard to keep track of its accomplishments to motivate the volunteers and celebrate their successes. When high school kids around Pennsylvania are banding together and completing in the hundreds of thousands of service hours per year, it is making a difference.

This isn't only happening where I live, it's all over. Unfortunately you don't hear about it too often but don't give up hope. Things are being done a little at a time and every time that they are the less fortunate are appreciating it.

Now, to make sure you don't all think I'm not in touch with reality I do realize that tons more needs to be done and that change isn't coming about fast enough. But that's all the more reason to try not to give up. I just thought a few words of encouragement and knowing that not everyone is ignoring these problems might help you while you're feeling this way.
