I just found out that my aunt is in a coma and on life support.
I don't know all the details, but it's acute kidney failure from years of alcohol abuse (apparently since her teens, so I guess she hid it well), and infection, and being prescribed the wrong antibiotic (not the doctor's fault, apparently the test was misleading). I believe that it is a medically induced coma to try to get her kidneys to respond to medication, but if she does not improve, they will not wake her up. They are monitoring her over the next 24 hours to make a decision.
My question is, how likely is it that she will get better? Does anyone know someone who was in a similar situation and recovered? I just want to be realistic.

Oh, Yero, I'm so sorry. I'll keep your aunt in mind.
My next door neighbor slipped into a coma several years ago and suffered failure of multiple organs, including her kidneys. The doctors said there was virtually no chance she'd wake up, but she recovered completely. It took her a few years, but now you'd never know she was ill at all-- she's completely her old self. However, it wasn't alcohol-related-- it was caused by an infection she got from some kind of bug bite, or something.

Posted: 8/19/09 at 5:43pmThere is really no way to tell. Everyone is different. It depends on her body's immune system, chemistry and her strength and general will to live. I had a Great Aunt who was critically ill with an infection and slipped into a coma. The doctors told the family she wouldn't make it through the night. She did in fact die in her sleep, 15 years later after making a full recovery.
