I'm in a pickle. I have wanted to start acting for some time now. I went to the extreme of starting an acting troupe at my school. We also do one play and one musical thoughout the school year. However, I want to go further. I just don't know how. There is one community theatre around here, but I don't know much about it. The thing is, my parents would not approve of my taking off of work to do these auditions, and if I were to get a part, to go to rehersals. I really want this. I'm 16, and intend to go to college to major in music theatre, and have been trying for a while to find places to get experience. Do any of you have suggestions as to what I could do beyond the school play to get experience? Thank you.
Try to go to the drama camps that are available, they're pricey, but from what I've heard, they're worth it. Try for Stagedoor Manor, Ann Arbor's summer program, CAP21, since you're a dancer, Broadway Theatre Project, and lots others. If you check with the musical theatre schools, they'll usually offer a summer program.

Ya...a big help with all of my experience has been supportive parents.
SH*T, I wish I was payed for all I do...someday. Experience is everything right now.
You have to decide what is more important.
if you can find any way to go for it, go for it before it is too late. when you're young, you can do the camps and community theater and learn a lot... it's really all about building the resume and learning as much as possible. even actors who work professionally take non-paying jobs in their spare time for experience ... go for it!
