Posted: 12/13/04 at 5:44pmIs it possible to have the same IP address as someone else, particularly if you're on a college-wide ethernet connection? I've just been accused of posting under other names on this message board I JUST joined and have never visited before, and I'm wondering why my IP address would be the same as the other "identities." Thanks.

Posted: 12/13/04 at 7:09pmAre you taking your laptop and using public ethernet jacks or the college's wireless network? Because then it's entirely possible, I think. (I'm not an expert on this topic.) Also, I guess if you and that other person both released your IP stacks(?) and you took the one that person used to have, something like that could happen.

Posted: 12/13/04 at 11:48pmI'm really getting upset (it's not this site, by the way) because they're saying things like "you're not fooling anyone!" and I have NO CLUE what the hell is going on. I've never been there before. It's the West Side Story official message board, in case anyone was wondering. Lovely people over there...*dripping sarcasm*

Go to Start->Run, and type in "cmd" (without the quotes) You'll get a command prompt. Type in "ipconfig /release", which will release your TCP/IP stack. Then, to connect again, type in "ipconfig /renew". Don't use quotes.
I'm not sure that'll get you a new number, but it might work.

Thank you, Plum. I don't know if it worked. What's strange is that sometimes it'll show 16.22. whatever as being the IP and then other times it's 205.34.whatever.
It's just so frustrating!!

Posted: 12/14/04 at 12:02amWhat I don't get is how everyone at that message board is tracking your IP address. *shrug* Let them know that being on the same network doesn't mean being the same person.

Oh, god. They'll probably hate me, too. Maybe you could refer them to this site? They should like musical theater.
Then again, they don't sound like the type of riff-raff we'd want running around here. :P

Lovely.
I really don't know how to solve your problem. It's never happened to me before on any message board. I guess you could either go back to lurking or just post as yourself despite everything and hope they get that you're not that person. Or you have MPD.

Oh sorry Shbrt!!!! The way you worded it confused me. I read it, " I've just been accused of posting under other names on this message board . I JUST joined, and have never visited before, and I'm wondering why my IP address would be the same as the other "identities." Thanks.
(Red symbolizes imaginary period I added.)
