It's funny cuz anyone who's taken a writing class or workshop has met this guy. And wanted to stuff his manuscript down his throat. My favorites are the ones who always come to class looking like they fell out of bed only to be hit by a bus. You know...hair sticking out everywhere, shoes untied, rumpled and wrinkled thrift store clothes...because they are so TORTURED. Usually, they are between the ages of 18-23, but they are writers (or playwrights) and they are just so darn quirky and moody and sh!t.

Sounds like acting class

Nah. Acting class is all about crying or taking absolutely EVERYTHING too seriously. They're usually not quirky at all and not so much "moody" as they are emotional. Acting students require lots and lots of hugs. Tortured writers don't want to be coddled or touched. They just want to be sure you know how odd and different they are.

You know what I hate about writing workshops? Any kind-- prose, poetry, playwriting, musical theater writing? Exactly how this piece begins...
"Great job, Joe Schmo. Really great work. Just a few nitpicks..."
And then he tears you to shreds. If you have so many nitpicks, don't start out praising the person. It's an empty, phony, bullsh*t compliment.
We've all be there. It sucks. You learn to tune it out. Love this piece, though.
