This interactive graphic from The New York Times shows how Obama has 512 paths to the White House and Romney has 76.
Obama's paths, for instance:
If Obama wins Florida and Ohio...Obama wins.
If Obama wins Florida and North Carolina...Obama wins.
If Romney wins Florida but Obama wins Ohio and North Carolina...Obama wins.
Romney's paths are much more difficult. The simplest one involves Romney taking 5 of the battleground states:
If Romney wins Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin...Romney wins.
PLUS: There are 5 paths to a tie, which would result in the House selecting the president (presumably Romney) and the Senate selecting vice president (probably Biden).

^ 1824
It doesn't have to be an exact tie. A candidate today needs at least 270 electoral votes. If that doesn't happen, it's up to the House. The House picked the President in 1824 (one with the #2 number of electoral votes), because that year's must-have number was not met.
