Ina I remember in "Ninochka" in her role as some kind of Countess or something.

Ilke I remember in "Animal Kingdom" and "Now Voyager". Her role as Charlotte Vale's sister in law is probably her most famous.

I cannot choose the better, as both were equally adept in their supporting actress roles. I think Ina Claire had more of a history in theatre than movies though.

Ina Claire had a fairly extensive Broadway career and even appeared in two Ziegfeld Follies.
Her movie career was short; however, she was wonderful as the Grand Duchess Swana in Ninotchka. She made a silent movie called Polly with a Past. I love that title almost as much as I love the name of the director of that picture, Leander de Cordova.

I haven't seen Polly with a Past and now I want to. Looks like I'll be checking the archives tonight!

Justme2, if you can find that movie, you let me know. Who is that in you avatar?

Evidently, prior to the movie version, Ina did Polly with a Past on Broadway for 315 performances at the Belasco Theatre. It was written by George Middleton and Guy Bolton.

re: Ilka Chase or Ina Claire?

I have a collection of "lost" silent films on VHS, and I've got to look through them to see if that's one of them.

The photo may be Alice White or it may be Clara Bow. I'm unsure, as I found it on the internet and it was unlabeled. I have lots of photos of both the above named actresses, and the photo resembles both.
