theaterfan -- join us in the middle. it's sane and peaceful over here. No partisan politics, corrupt politicians, or big government profiteers. Just common sense. You cannot escape the greedy and cronyism running rampant in either party. Avoid them both like the plague. Please.

That sounds nice in theory. But you must know the system is designed so that only the nominee from one of the two major parties can be elected president. As in 2000, a vote for an independent may well be a de facto vote for the GOP--and we should all shudder to imagine a Republican president appointing members to the Supreme Court.

( we have one up here in Canada called the New Democrat Party/ NDP and they just MAY become the party in office in the next election, at the very least, as part of a coalition government they will have a sh!tload of influence)

Yes, sabrelady, the difference is we don't have a parliamentary system. It's winner-take-all in the electoral college, the senate and the house. We didn't always have only two viable parties, but the current system has been in place for over a century. Every once in a while a third-party candidate shows up only to split the vote of one of the major parties and leave us with a minority presidency.
Of course, if Trump wants to run as an independent, that would be just fine.
