This article absolutely blew my mind. Reads like something out of The Onion.

What you're seeing is the victim mentality on steroids. It's political correctness blown out of proportion.

Why should everyone be required to provide "safe spaces" for other people? In the future, will businesses have to provide safe spaces with coloring books and bubbles when an employee can't handle stress on the job?

Rape is a very serious thing, and counseling should be made available for as long as the person feels they need it. But, as we saw with Lena Dunham, using the rape as a tool to control other people is wrong.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I think her phrase "self-infantilization" is a trigger word for me.

Ugh. I get the concept of safe spaces--as I heard the term used (and the article talks about this,) as being a place to discuss ideas where people feel "safe" to bring up their own experiences and opinions. Which is fine (although I suspect proves problematic given the way many people view such things...) But cookies? PlayDoh? Videos of puppies?? I have no idea when the use ofthe term and what it meant go so completely flipped around.

I think the problem with "trigger warning" culture, which has become so prevalent on college campuses in the last decade, is that it creates the false idea that all potentially troubling ideas, issues, and experiences can simply be erased because they might make someone feel uncomfortable. The world doesn't work that way, and extreme erasure doesn't prepare students for the realities they're going to encounter once they leave the ivory tower. I've taught a college course one semester a year for the past fifteen years, and in just that time period I've seen this misguided attempt at over-sensitivity take over.

I remember way back in 2011 when I learned how to manage my PTSD by recognizing and accepting triggers and learning how to deal with them regardless the place or setting. Attending an event that revolves solely around a trigger topic would not have been recommended by my therapist (one of those new-fangled head shrinkers who actually ended my therapy because I had learned to cope and there were others whose needs were greater) or probably by any other rational and logical human in my life. It's not really too hard to make a judgment call when you know what sets off your PTSD and how severely you are affected by it. And the option of regressing to a pre-school atmosphere disturbs me more than my PTSD. Do they also pass out cheap cookies and Hi-C from a can?

But that was back in 2011. It was a different world then.
