In need of some job advice

I have hashed this out over and over in my head and with my husband and I'm stumped. I thought I was offer my problem up to you guys. I applied for a promotion at work about 2 months ago and never heard anything back. I assumed that no news was no promotion so I applied for a job else where last week. This job would involve working with children which would look good on my resume when I go to apply for a teaching position after graduation this coming year. Here comes the fun part. This afternoon I got a call from my boss and she wants to meet with me tomorrow morning and the tone of the call sounds like she is offering me the position. (The person who had the job before me told me she took about 2 months to get back with him so the time lapse is not suprising at all.)

So now I have to decide if I should take the position (if offered to me tomorrow) or decline it and wait to hear from the other job. The pay will work out to be about the same, but the position I will hear about tomorrow requires more hours, they are very flexible, but still it is more hours. I am confused and stressed...

Anyone have any advice or been in a similar situation?

I thought of that as well, I just didn't know if it was "right" to do that. Take one job and then if the other offer comes along to quit and take it. It doesn't seem like the best way to leave a job.

I know I am, but my husband and I are saving for a house and we are in our final year of college. I just don't want to get screwed over on money right now. I want to be prepared in case I am offered the job tomorrow. I don't want to be caught off guard and I want to make the best decision. Thanks for your help Yawper.

Depending on your relationship with your current boss, you might also be honest and say that, thinking you had not gotten the promotion, you went ahead an applied for another job that would offer professional growth and a salary increase. You might also add that as you are happy with your current company, you are inclined to stay, but would like a couple of days to think it over.

This might work well if you actually have a relationship with the person who will be making the offer.

Yes, except that if you tell them that and choose to stay, they are even happier with you. If you take the other job, it doesn't really matter.

But if you *do* go the honesty route, don't do it until a firm offer has been made.

NEVER tell a current boss you are looking for another job! In fact, don't even tell co-worker friends that! It's a sure way to get you boss looking to replace you.

Everyone seems to agree: Accept the promotion if offered. Even if you end up getting offered the other job, you'll be in a better postion. If you get offered the new job THEN you can go to your boss (if you want) and say "They have offered me a 10% increase over what I make here. I'd LIKE to stay here but I must think of my family's finances...."

Ok so I went and met with my boss today and I was not offered the position I was expecting because my class requirements would have interfered with job requirements. I would have had to be able to be two places at once. Since they could not offer that position to me I was offered another position with more pay than I am making now, but the hours wouldn't be stable and it would be one of those "work when we need you other wise don't come in" kind of jobs. I told her I would think about it and let her know by the end of the week. I called the place and because it involves working with children they had to do a background check. Once that comes in my application will be moved forward and since I worked there before and left on good terms it should be a sure thing.

In short I have decided to turn down the offered position, keep my current position and should the other job work out take it and run.

I rarely see the woman I met with as she is my boss' boss, but then again I never see my boss because "waking up before noon is too horrible to think about" according to her. Must be nice. No one knows of my plans and I shall keep it that way.
