Increasing vocal range

How does a singer's range actually increase? I mean obviously everyone wants all the notes they can get, but how does a voice actually begin to sing notes more comfortably. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with breath and support, but I'm talking about how notes that would be unattainable at one point, and now you can sing. Is it just a maturity thing, meaning, as time goes by you will gain a few notes? Or does it depend on something else such as how much you sing, etc. I really have no idea.
I want to apologize for some offensive messages posted on this board under my name. The night 0f 12-15-08 I did not have internet access, and someone had used my name to post something offensive. My avatar was also changed. I dont' know what else was posted, or if anyone recieved bad PMs, but I want to apologize for that. I've changed my password, and even though I was not the one posting these messages it still needed to be corrected.

re: Increasing vocal range

It mostly has to do with maturity, but I find that when I generally sing in a higher tessitura than usual, I can hit notes that I can't hit when I sing in my mid-range.

re: Increasing vocal range

So I'm assuming that vocal folds act as any other sort of muscle. Singing higher stretches it out slightly? That's probably a terrible metaphor, seeing as you would never want to strech your chords like you would if you were going to work out, but go with me for clarification.

re: Increasing vocal range

Basically, I've been told that maturity helps your vocal range. Also, whenever you're warming up and doing scales try to sing out of your range a little and soon you should be able to expand your range. I hope that helps! :)

Yes!
And that is actually a pretty decent metaphor.

re: Increasing vocal range

Along the same lines, I know everyone talks about increasing their range to sing higher notes, but what about lower? Does it work the same way?

re: Increasing vocal range

Someone's vocal range can increase in range based on the efficiency of the coordination of the vocal folds. This allows your chest, middle, and head voice to connect. There are different exercises to help with this. A good rule to follow is that the higher you go you need less air but more spin. You need air but that right amount of air.

re: Increasing vocal range

I may be wrong but I've heard that the male voice isn't done changing/developing until you're about 30. Is that correct? I know, personally, my range has extended a lot in the past year.
