I say bravo to Hawaii and South Dakota (I think it's both) who do NOT observe Columbus Day, but rather Indigenous Peoples Day.....
A day glorifying the white mans first days of erradicating the Native-American cultures in the New World is just wrong....tomorrow is no holiday in that respect.

Posted: 10/9/05 at 2:35pmI didn't see this one Elphaba. I suppose there is no chance to get this to spread. I remember quite a bit of backlash when around 1992 people complained about Columbus Day, and once again the "traditionalists" won.

Posted: 10/9/05 at 2:37pmwell, I guess they need to define exactly what the holiday is for, and frankly Columbus landing on an island in Hispanola just doesn't cut it......

Posted: 10/9/05 at 3:35pmIt's more to celebrate all things Italian, isn't it? Just as St. Patrick's Day is more about being Irish than it is about celebrating the patron saint of Ireland.

Posted: 10/9/05 at 4:24pmwell, then let's change the name. I grew-up in Nor Cal, and there it was never about celebrating Italian heritage.......it was always Columbus discovering the new world, which of course he did not
