Hi all,
I'm currently a first-year college student and am looking for some summer internships that I can apply to. While I know there are a ton out there, a lot of them want you to come in with experience. I, on the other hand, am looking to *get* some experience. Any ideas?

Oops, that'd be a good thing to answer...!
I'd prefer something on the technical or front-of-house side of things. I've found a lot of internships that have to do with TV/film/music production, but I want to be involved with live theatre (hence, I posted here...).
Sorry about that.
agh, I really need to start looking.
Since your profile says you're an intern addict...
Haha... it says internet addict.
You could try the New Victory theatre, they do summer internships.

haha, no, I am not addicted to INTERNS. Just to this here interNET thing.
Check the Playbill.com job listings.

Heh...no one promised that I could read! Teehehe. Oops! Freudian slip?
Thanks, but Playbill's looking for people with some hardcore experience! Alas and alack.
The New Victory Theatre, on the other hand, looks like it could be very possible.
Thanks guys. I appreciate both of your help. :0)
Well, it doesn't hurt to apply anyway -- maybe you can win them over in your interview. I got a KILLER internship last summer, after my first year of college with zero experience. You've got to learn somewhere, right?
i actually got a FANTASTIC internship with a highly reputable Broadway-related company a few years ago through playbill.com with ZERO experience. Enthusiasm and passion were heavy on my side. :)
I have no advice to offer in that field, then, but it sounds like you'll find some good advice here.
I'll be applying for psychology research-related internships, so that's a bit different.

Kook, Emcee, you wouldn't happen to be able to point me in the direction of the places you interned, would you? *hem hem*
Good luck, Siren! :0)

If you're studying theatre at college, your college should be able to help you here. The best internship positions in this field are secured this way because of contacts between the top college programs and the people in the theatre 'biz', especially in the city. Check with your department heads and your profs.

what was it and how do I go about looking?

Where? What part of the country?
Figure out where the theatres are and present yourself by mail. Brains and common sense count for a lot in stock. If you do not need a place to live or a salary there are not many theatres that are going to look an unsalaried gift horse in the mouth.
You can always be trained to do a job that you have an aptitude for. There was a firing and that's how I got my first stage managing job. A friend of mine ended up at a stock house as tech director because somebody left, and he was living with his parents nearby.
Someone will always get fired or get another job mid-season and if you are any good you can present yourself again and there you go.
Watch, listen, engage constructively and you'll learn a whole lot more than you will in any course at school.
