My husband asked me how many how many unexpected civilian deaths I thought there had been in Iraq since the beginning of the war... you know, people caught in the crossfire, hit with stray bombs...that kind of thing. I answered "a couple of thousand...5000, maybe..."

Civilian death toll in Iraq exceeds 100,000
Thu 28 October, 2004 20:14
By Patricia Reaney

LONDON (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed in violence since the U.S.-led invasion last year, American public health experts have calculated in a report that estimates there were 100,000 "excess deaths" in 18 months.

The rise in the death rate was mainly due to violence and much of it was caused by U.S. air strikes on towns and cities.

"Making conservative assumptions, we think that about 100,000 excess deaths, or more have happened since the 2003 invasion of Iraq," said Les Roberts of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in a report published online by The Lancet medical journal.

"The use of air power in areas with lots of civilians appears to be killing a lot of women and children," Roberts told Reuters.

The report came just days before the U.S. presidential election in which the Iraq war has been a major issue.

Mortality was already high in Iraq before the war because of United Nations sanctions blocking food and medical imports but the researchers described what they found as shocking.

The new figures are based on surveys done by the researchers in Iraq in September 2004. They compared Iraqi deaths during 14.6 months before the invasion in March 2003 and the 17.8 months after it by conducting household surveys in randomly selected neighbourhoods.

The only thing worse than this is going to be the rationalizing and explaining away that will take place.

This is shameful, and will have ramifications from this point on.

I truly wish the Iraqi people knew how most of us feel about this.

that study is not a fact of anything. it's estimations and bad ones at that.

http://www.techcentralstation.com/102904J.html

also consider that this site was set up explicitly for the purpose of documenting civilian deaths and trying to paint the u.s. as uncaring conquerors bent on widespread slaughter and they haven't even gotten near that.

i expect before the weekend is over to see that bush was actually the recipient of the mysterious hitler brain that's been kept alive in stasis since ww2. i think that'll be krugman's last column before the election.

the sky is falling, the sky is falling!!!!!!

papa - what I read is that he's all up in arms about the estimations being reported with only a 95% assurity - as long as there is a 5% chance that the numbers are completely wrong they shouldn't be published?

I also notice that he spends the entire article damning the reason for its early publication and questioning the complete validity of the findings, but never really addresses the fact that there have been THOUSANDS of deaths. Even if the numbers are skewed a little, they couldn't be so wrong as to make this anything less than horrifying.

And my earlier statement stands - the ONLY thing worse than this information is the attempt at rationalization and excuse that will arise from it. Updated On: 10/29/04 at 01:57 PM

Yes, but why aren't the Iraqi's accepting us? Where are the thrown flowers? Don't they know how good we are? I know they are an ancient culture and all, but if they just give in to the smell some good ol' American Apple Pie and everything will be wonderful! Why do they have to make it so darned difficult!

because i suck at math, i present fred kaplan who's no friend of the administration. he explains that 95% thingy right off the bat.

http://slate.msn.com/id/2108887/

he seems to have sold matthew yglesias, whos anothe guy not so fond of the bush administration (and that's putting it mildly).

kaplan's right, horror is horror, and lies are lies.
