The trailers looked awesome and Spike Lee is usually a great director so why is this getting such terrible reviews? Is it really that awful?
It looks incongruant. First, you have this murder, and then you have the missing artifact? I dunno...The two don't seem to mesh well.

Plus its spike lee. how many, white men are evil movies can you make before people get bored.
I haven't been paying attention to Spike Lee since he had his last public outburst.

It was 2 hours and 40 minutes. I usually have little problems with long films but this film really felt like it could've been cut about an hour. After the first 45 minutes I felt like I was looking at instead of watching it. We get it, white people are bad. It's disgusting how Spike Lee had to attack Clint Eastwood in order to get publicity for this bad film.
Oh, and there's so much over-acting, it's cringe-worthy. I thought it was going to be a good film but it just wasn't.

Now that the film is not getting good reviews and flopped badly at the box office, I wonder if Spike will be complaining about this for years to come.
Just make another movie, dude!
Of course he'll complain! That's what he does best. He's going to complain about White Hollywood not treating his People right. He's going to complain about the same ol' crap he's always complained about. Didn't he ever think it wasn't because he was black, but because he's terrible? Of course that never crossed his mind because his ego's the size of Russia.

Most of his movies are extremely good. DO THE RIGHT THING is amazing.
I think he's wildly uneven in his filmmaking. But there is no question that he has certain visual trademarks that define his style.
In terms of the content, he has something to say and he says it. That he gets such a reaction and inspires discussion is exactly what he wants.

Sandwich I agree Do the Right Thing is a great film. But I kinda agree that "we get it, white people are bad." I almost wish he'd go back to problems within the actual black community like he did with SCHOOL DAZE, light blacks against darker blacks, instead of the same old "damn whitey/ the man" mentality. He's been poking that bear since the late 80s.
Just LET IT GO SPIKE!!!

I loved 25th hour, Inside Man, and Crooklyn. But a 3 hour movie isn't going to guarantee you an Oscar. And I like how he says "Oh now that I've called out Clint I won't get an Oscar." No, you won't get an Oscar because your movie is boring and full of over-acting amateurs. WE GET IT SPIKE. WE GET IT.
"I think he's wildly uneven in his filmmaking."
I agree. His other magnum opus 'Malcolm X' weighed in with a run time of 202 min. Editing is my main issue with many of his films. Yeah, he's a bit of a one-trick pony when it comes to subject matter but so was John Wayne when it came to his acting range and if he's not more careful in the future DeNiro could be inheriting John Wayne's crown.
yea, he was very public in saying that the studio made him stop the spat with Eastwood. He said they told him that Clint was a beloved member of the academy and it would have ramifications at Oscar time.
May I add that the whole Eastwood debacle made Spike appear petty and unsophisticated.

Spike is a bitch. He makes the same movie every year (with a few exceptions).
THE REASON YOU WON'T WIN AN OSCAR SPIKE IS BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT A GOOD FILMMAKER.

Being a bad filmmaker has never been a serious obstacle to winning an Oscar. Don't make me name names.

From his recent comments in The New Yorker, it's clear that Hillary immediately became "evil" and "the enemy" when she ran against Obama.

Well see, there's his mistake, hillary was evil and the enemy long before that.
Spike Lee is usually a great director
In what universe?
I agree that Spike Lee is an angry man but this is a fantastic movie. It was a bit too long and would only benefit by shortening the length of it. I found the story to be very moving and heartfelt. In my opinion, I think Do The Right Thing is Spike Lee's best work followed by She's Gotta Have It.

i lost some respect for Spike Lee after he tried to sue Spike Television from using that name because he felt everyone would associate the word spike with him... how freaking conceited and narcisitic can someone be?! geez... it's a channel for men.. i immediately thought spiking the football.... sometimes this guy just bugs me... and does anyone think he would've done a good job with the RENT movie?

No. He would have made Benny a white guy and Mark and Roger black guys. And would have turned the whole movie into a story about the struggle of the black artist against the Oppressive white landlord (the man).
