Is Vick Finished?

gaej - that is yet another sad reality in our current climate of idolizing celebrities and choosing heroes on a whim isn't it?
I did see a girl at the mall this past weekend wearing a Vick jersey and I had to bite my tongue. It's her right to wear it...but it's mine to comment.
Seriously though, I owned a Michael Vick jersey and I'm currently using it as a "door mat cover" until the next time I need to clean out my little box.

For a fantasy newbie - you've got nothing to be ashamed of! You're definitely giving me a run for my money.
Speaking of fantasy...guess who drafted Michael Vick as his 2nd QB in his really early football league?

It is kind of fun, but I really don't have the time to follow everything - and I am not doing football - and it is weird to be in a position to be rooting against your home team when you have a fantasy player that is pitching against your home team.
It is an interesting diversion.
BTW - love the pictures of your new home. Your cats seem to approve!

Posted: 8/23/07 at 1:33amI thought Vick's taking responsibility was undercut by the use of the word "mistake." Since when is repeated and intentional infliction of cruelty a mistake? A mistake is - oh, I thought it was Tuesday, or I got the answer to the second math problem wrong. A crime is a crime because of the presence of INTENT - which is why a mistake of fact or law is not a defense. When you drown a dog, it isn't an OOPS.

Posted: 8/23/07 at 7:58amDiva, once people become famous and a superstar in sports they sometimes think they're above the law and will never get caught. Frankly, I never heard of him until this story broke (I just don't like football, never have.). Lock him up, throw away the key.

It depends on how he acts from now on. Does he take the Pacman Jones approach and keep getting into trouble or does he transform into a Ray Lewis preacher-man-type? As bad as what Vick did was, Lewis was mixed up in human murder and he's back.
It also depends on how long Al Davis lives, because I see Oakland as the only place to take him and only if Crazy Al is still kicking.

To be fair, Ray Lewis was never found guilty of anything.

Didn't he plea bargain it down to a misdemeanor in exchange for testifying against his friends? My memory is a little hazy at the moment.
Either way, my point was that Vick isn't the first athlete to get mixed up in illegal activities and he won't be the last. It's up to him to work his way out of it, and use whatever guidance he can get from players who have been in similar situations. Hell, he just should have talked to Warrick Dunn in the locker room and learned how to use all this money and influence for good.

Posted: 8/23/07 at 9:59amPersonally I think "let the punishment fit the crime". Let him play in the NFL again, but only if, when he doesn't perform well, he gets treated exactly the same way he treated the dogs that didn't "perform" well.

Ah, that's right, Lewis pleaded down to obstruction of justice. Still, it isn't like he was convicted of murder. Vick didn't plead down -- he plead guilty to the charges before him.
I do look forward to Vick coming back to football, if only for the heckling possibilities it will create for the fans.
