I go to high school (I'm 17) and I have only like 5 months left to school, but lately my school has been giving me a lot of problems for a lot of reasons (I have a medical condition, I perform, so sometimes I have tours, auditions, etc.) and my mom and I are really tired of it, and she would like to homeschool me for the remaining months. I was curious if anyone here is home schooled and what they think of it, and also how long does it take to change over to being home-schooled? Like how long to fill out the papers and then begin? thanks so much!!!

You wouldn't rather fight it out for a few more months?
I *think* your mom has to have some sort of license or something like that, that says she is able to teach you. I'm not really sure though.
We found out she doesn't need a license, anyone can do it. I was just curious if anyone was home schooled.

Not really, it is getting too hard. Everyday someone has a problem with me, and I have a stomach problem, and when something bothers me, it makes my stomach worse because it stresses me out. Its hard to explain.

Regulations depend on the state you're in, and your state will probably have a home-schooling organization that can help you. Obviously your situation's a bit unusual. You'll need to inform your district what you're doing so you can get out of public school, and proof, in the end, that you've "graduated" high school if you want to get into college.

Many states offer homeschooling via the internet, complete with tutors & materials.
Actually, my nephew's a TV actor, and his mom (my sister-in-law) homeschools him. She was given the curriculum and she teaches him when he's auditioning.
I started homeschooling this year (I'm in 10th grade) and I use Laurel Springs. You can do the courses either online, or using text books. You don't need to have anyone teach you, unless you're having trouble and then you can get a tutor (like I'm doing for math), because all of the lessons are really detailed and basically give you the "lectures" that your teachers would give you in a regular school.
I'm not sure how long it would take you to change over/fill out all the forms because you're starting in the middle of the year..
PM if you want any more info.

OR you could save yourself a lot of heartache and expense later by staying in school while starting therapy IMMEDIATELY. Stress-related stomach pains don't miraculously cease when you run away from your problems.
Ditto to what Namo said.
It only gets more stressful from here. High school is a tough time. But if you go to college, it'll be just like high school - with the added fun of being BROKE! Or if you get a job, it will be all the stresses of work plus the new-found fun of juggling bills, learning how to cook/clean for yourself, etc. Future admissions offices/employers will look at your educational record and WILL question you about why you quit school so close to the end of your senior year.
I'm sure that you are under a lot of stress, and I'm not trying to make light of that. But I agree that the best solution might be to seek help - from a therpist, from a gastrointestinal specialist, someone. There are plenty of people out there who have the resources to help you become a happy and productive individual - all you have to do is seek them out.

i would see if you can get a tutor FROM your school for the next few months.
leaving suddenly WILL look weird on your transcript, and it's true -- it does get a lot more stressful from here on out.
imagine if you have a paper due, a book to read, a song to learn, and you also have to go to the gym -- all before 8 am and it's 11 pm. your stomach might start to act up and you won't be able to do any of that -- and your professors may not really care that much. i'm sorry, but it's true. i would suggest getting your stomach problem taken care of as soon as possible -- even if it means holding off on the performing for a little while. think about it -- this stomach problem could hurt your performing career later and it could also get worse.

Geez, I didn't even notice the part about stomachaches. Speaking as someone who's been there, gone that, and gotten the gastrointestinal virus, college is only going to stress you out more. You'll less and more flexible class time, which helps, but if you go to a regular undergrad program you'd be surprised how quickly all that extra time disappears. So unless you decide you're going to go to correspondence school or skip college altogether, think about solving your underlying problems.

Double post- my apologies Updated On: 2/27/06 at 01:12 AM
Hi I've been homeschooled all my life because I have dislexea. I think its been wonderful for me,especially since I've also been having health problems this last year.I start doing my school work about 9ish and then finish around 1 so then I have the rest of the day to practice my voice and piano. I say do it. Also it depends on what you are going to do after highschool, like going to school or not,you might want to just get your GED.
I couldn't tell you about how long the paper work will take because it changes for each state.
There is also the option of correspondence schools that way you could get a highschool diploma.
I hope this will help you out.

Ditto to what everyone's been saying---get the stomach thing looked into and treated pronto. Once you get to college, you really have to rely on yourself to get to class and what not and "I'm sick" is really NOT a valid excuse to professors, particularly theater professors.
That being said, I very much understand where you're coming from. I don't know the nature of your stomach problems obviously, but I personally suffered from horrible stress-related stomachaches in high school. This made me skip school often, and that plus skipping school to audition or work--let's just say that I was nearly thrown out of high school a few times. If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to PM me. Hang in there!
Hello! I'm currently a college freshman, but was homeschooled all my life. All I know is that in Oklahoma, you don't have to do anything much-you just tell the state you are homeschooling your child/ren and you're set. My mom was a teacher so she just tought me and siblings everything. But yes, don't just assume everything will be hunky-dorey and fine by just running away. Get yourself looked at by a doctor.
