I heard Mira Nair speak last night something she said really stuck with me. Now looking at it, it seems fitting for the civil unions argument as well as its original intent:
"Never treat anything you do as a stepping stone. Do it fully, and follow it completely."

Now I realize who Mira Nair is! Of course. She also made the film based on Abraham Verghese's book, My Own Country.
I love that book and I understand the film was wonderful
