Is there an airline/flight equivalent of "cancellation line"?

My sister is trying to come to NY from LA for a weekend, but flights are insane. If she were to go to LAX tonight, is there a way to get a cheapish lat minute red eye? Does such a thing exist (for cancelled flights) or would it be insanely expensive?
