I love this thread. I'd actually forgotten how much we looked forward to it's yearly showing more than we did any holiday. Even though we only had one television in the house that everyone had to watch, there was never any arguement about what to watch the night that they were showing "Wizard of Oz". Even my older brother, who hated musicals, waited for that night. He did the best Wicked Witch impersonation. One time, he tried to belch the entire score. (Hey, to a eight year old, that seemed magical!)
I thought the flying monkeys were the scariest things in the movie. The witch (Maggie) was awesome but somehow I could tell that the lady underneath the green paint and false nose wasn't quite all that bad. My little brother couldn't see it though. Every time the witch came on the screen, he ran under the dining room table and rolled up in a tight ball, with his hands and arms over his face. He wouldn't come out until we assured him that she was gone. I used to feel sorry for him because he was missing some of the best parts of the movie and I just knew that bad dreams were sure to follow.
I've now seen it at least 50 times but this last one was the first time I noticed the witch's sister's feet sticking out underneath Dorothy's house before Glenda's arrival. I guess there's always something to discover!
Really? You never noticed the feet?
I thought the monkey's were the scariest part too, although to be honest I don't really ever remember being really scared by any of it.
I don't remember being scared either.
Well, the talking trees are quite mean and frightning.
No - I was always watching Dorothy. I never noticed the feet until the camera closed in on them after Glinda's arrival. On the other hand, I always remembered Glinda's sulfur comment. I thought of it every time someone struck a sulfur match.
I myself have always liked the Munchkins. And to this day one of the highlights of my husband's life, as he tells it, is meeting Meinhardt Raabe. So our child is not getting any anti-Munchkin bias from US! I just want to make that clear.
And Husk, I love how your friend is afraid of the Pope!!!
That is kinda funny.......
Alot of people are afraid of puppets though.

I always thought the Pope looked kinda like Glinda...the big dress...the crown...the staff...the bubble car...
OK, now THAT was funny, husk!
Husk-- That made me snort in a most unladylike fashion.
Honestly, the Pope kinda scares me as well. I think he reminds me of that Palpatine guy from Star Wars.
THIS pope scares me!
That's the pope I'm talkin' about. And he looks like Palpatine:
Shmerg, I'm dyin', I'm dyin'! LOL.
While the thread has been threadjacked to comment on the Pope, I think that he looks like he's been drawn by Gahan Wilson.
Are my grandchildren too young to watch this film, Josh is 4 and Nichola is 3?

I was barely 4 when I saw it, and I did ok.
I think it probably depends on the child's temperament, Sticks.
And Schmerg, your post cracked me up!
