The problem with your "imagine if" is that there are zero specifics whereas the event under discussion is entirely specific to a singular event and set of circumstances. That is why "imagine if"s are usually faulty comparisons and not worthy of a "THIS" gif. Ask Mr. Roxy. He's notoriously fond of using them and they never ever work unless they are a direct comparison (or at least a reasonably close proximation). It's nowhere near an "equal comparison".

Why is it so threatening for somebody to pose a thought or a question or a circumstance or a hypothetical that even remotely aligns with a conservative and/or Republican perspective? What good is accomplished by calling people who have opinions you disagree with "a cancer"?

I am, like many Americans, furious with the DNC and disappointed in the party in more ways than I care to count. I am also not a huge fan of Barack Obama's performance.

But this argument is just silly.



Only one party has run campaign after campaign on a platform of explicit anti-intellectualism, culminating with a barely-literate sociopath elected president. One party has run campaign after campaign on xenophobia and homophobia and a fear of diversity.

I'm done with the "If you're so open-minded, why aren't you open to my closed-mindedness?" argument. I'm done with the "If you're so inclusive, why won't you include my bigotry?" argument. That's all doubletalk.

You're going to see most of the theater community (and its fans) line up in opposition of the right wing because the arts necessarily respect diversity; necessarily respect the liberalism of experimentation and necessarily respect empathy.

Obviously, there appears to be a blue majority on this board. You can either "accept it" and "move on" or quit being one of those "whiny conservatives".

That's pretty reductive. There have been numerous people with which so many of us have had differing opinions, even politically, that none of us have called "a cancer". Some of which are even our friends. Wonderful, great friends!

I do wish with same sex couples who marry that there were different names besides husband/wife/partner. Forgive my naivety but that article refers to 'husband'-male so is the other male 'wife' or 'husband' as well?

Could we adopt another word from another language for 'partner' that doesn't sound so harsh?

Thought I'd just change direction as was getting a little steamy in here and almost time to make those NY resolutions-so that we can break them the next day.

"Husband" and "wife" are gender-specific. "Partner" and "spouse" are non-gender specific. My husband and I are both male, so we refer to each other as "husband" because we are both male and we are legally married and it is the term we prefer. We even had the option to use either "husband" or "spouse" on our marriage certificate. "Partner" is the most generic as it is used for relationships of any self-identified gender both of legal or non-legal status. "Husband/wife/spouse" actually carry legal connotations, whether used casually or not.

An old friend of mine, self described as "the most non pc lesbian you ever met" is a writer. She stated to me at the time of her wedding that as a writer she did not believe in confusing people, esp readers w terms that have been used to mean one thing and now can mean another. She and her significant other refer to each other as their spouse and to continue her statement "nobody has ever been unaware of what their relationship is."

So that is the phrase I use even if folks ain't married up.

(PS she hated the term "partner" said it sounded like they were a corporation- "Lesbo & Lesbo Inc"
