I am beginning to like FRINGE, in spite of the gruesome special effects. It is fun to try to catch a glimpse of Michael Cerveris as "the Observer". But I was so impressed with Jefferson Mays who took the acting to a surprisingly touching level during last night's episode. Anyone else catch it? Very nice job.
I was watching FRINGE from week 1, but sort of lost interest when the team would "win, but still lose" to Massive Dynamics every week. The conspiracy thing was a big turnoff for me in the X-FILES, and I had no patience for it again from FRINGE.
Anyway, I happeed to watch it again this week, and while I thought it was a pretty good episode, and that the conspiracy aspect of it had been toned down, I thought the MULTIPLE walkbys of The Observer in the club were distracting and ridiculous. After the first ne, I was thinking "okay that was kind of fun," but the second tme, it was so odd and obvious as to stretch credibility.
I'll probably stay with FRINGE through the season finale out of loyalty to James Noble's Emmy-worthy supporting performances, but boy, do I ope it finds a beter balance between reality and stupdity.
I dropped out in the middle of the season too, but can't resist Joshua Jackson. I never liked X FILES and see Massive Dynamics as a pseudo-Hanso Industries so I have totally stopped trying to make the series make sense. I also appreciate Noble's performance - although I will never eat shrimp cocktail again.
Without the conspiracy stuff you mentioned you didn't like, MisterRussell, FRINGE is just another CSI knock-off, just with a bit of a supernatural element. Without that common thread, FRINGE would just be a series of mostly unrelated, standalone, predictable episodes (predictable in the sense that the pattern is the same: weird case, case thickens and thickens until a break, then resolution).
I, for one, love the show. Of course its not all that realistic, it's science fiction. Personally, I think they've mostly kept a pretty decent balance between reality and FAR OUT THERE science fiction. I can't wait to see where the series will lead.
