Jennifer Hudson Slams Accusation She’s Homophobic

"“In a recent interview, I was asked how I reconciled being a Christian with performing at events for my gay fans. I find it upsetting that some folks equate being a Christian with being intolerant of gay people. That may, unfortunately, be true for some, but it is not true for me. I have talked often of my love and support of the gay community. I have said again and again that it was the gay community that supported me long before and long after American Idol, and kept me working and motivated. It is the gay community that celebrated my voice and my size and my personality long before Dreamgirls.

“Yes, I was raised Baptist. Yes, I was taught that the Bible has certain views on homosexuality. The Bible also teaches us not to judge. It teaches us to love one another as God loves us all. I love my sister, my two best friends and my director dearly. They happen to be gay. So what? While some search for controversy, I hope that my friends and fans who know me know where I stand.”

For those too lazy to click on the link, here is Jennifer's response:

I just read an interview with her from IN magazine (a free gay weekly here in SoCal) and she was incredibly supportive and proactive. And this was done before all the nonsense concerning this other interview took place. I'm happy she's jumping right on it and addressing the issue.

SweetQ, the tone of the title of this thread is so different that a new thread was warranted. Chill, would you?

Anyway, I think that Jennifer represented herself well with this clarification.

I'm calm

DAME answered my question.

Sometimes people start threads with different titles and the same info. This same info was posted in the other thread so I just made a comment.

Chill, sweetestsiren.

If Rosie approaches this with the same type of blinders-on activism that she attacked Ms. Ripa with, I'm personally flying to NYC and bitch-slapping her.

I'm glad she's addressing this. That other interview was basically attempting to back her into a corner in an attempt to get a "homophobic" statement out of her for publicity sake. She mentions church in passing and they immediately launch into a targetted series of questions trying to get her to admit to something. It's just petty to go after HER when there are people that actually ARE homophobic that are being ignored.

Just goes to show how damn stupid the other article was. Look at how they have to cite the supposed 'quote.'

She’s also quoted in an interview with the Dallas Voice, saying, according to Life & Style Editor Daniel Kusner, that while she doesn’t judge anyone, “according to what we’re taught, and what it says in the bible,” homosexuality is “a sin.”

Seriously. She never said that. They can't even cite her saying it directly. I love that woman.

re: Jennifer Hudson Slams Accusation She’s Homophobic

I'm tired of the notion that being a Christian = thinking that being gay is a sin. Not all Christians believe that. Not all Christians believe the Bible has been translated properly.

I'm glad she is clearing this up. I am confounded by what seems to be a recent trend to paint certain people as homophobes when they are not.

re: Jennifer Hudson Slams Accusation She’s Homophobic

Well, fair is fair - and truth be told, it's certainly not difficult to see how this has become a 'knee-jerk' issue for many gays. And Elphaba does have a point about wanting to still call it a sin, and yet say that's not a problem.

Personally, I think many people of good conscience get tripped up by the language that they have been taught. Perhaps she is - at most - guilty of not quite expressing succinctly that which is truly in her heart. But I really see that as being derived from her background (at least the verbage.)

At this point, I've seen nothing to make me really question her heart or intent. She's young, and I feel for her as she discovers what it's like to have every utterance dissected to the nth degree.

La Streisand used to tell an old joke about a woman inspecting a chicken inside and out, then declining it as not acceptable - prompting the butcher to enquire, "Could you pass a test like that?" I think it applies here - as well as MANY other places.

I do understand the anger in someone saying things like

"Being gay is a sin" or "Marriage should be between a man and a woman" and then saying, "But, I adore gay people". I understand the anger at someone who wants to be your friend and yet thinks those things.

It does make me wanna show off my middle finger to them, but I am trying to have patience with people who have at the very least come that far.

re: Jennifer Hudson Slams Accusation She’s Homophobic

I was speaking in general terms, not necessarily about Ms. Hudson.

I actually rarely debate the specifics in BWW--I'm more concerned with the bigger picture and in attempting to find a consistent standard that everyone is held to. I also do this because often times we are hearing incorrect information.
