Not surprisingly, a lot of the focus in the hearings has been on abortion and privacy.

They just confirmed Roberts 78-22.
Already the talking heads are talking about the "great Victory" of George W Bush. Blah.

You read it here first, folks.

I really don't think this is as terrible a thing as many on this board think it is.

It seems to me that when he was first nominated ultra-liberals were saying "he's not for us" and ultra-conservatives were saying "he's not for us." Meanwhile, people in the middle were say "eh, OK."

Only time will tell what Roberts will be like. I think as a replacement for Reinquist he will be fine.

What bothers me is that the press is lauding this as Chris Mathews just said "As evidence that the President has an excellent vetting process, and comfirms his values."

I'm ok with this for some reason. Unless he totally proves my hope wrong, I don't think he is going to roll back rights for women and gays.

JRB, I agree with you. I hope that he is more moderate than Rehnquist. There will be a battle if Bush nominates Owens or another conservative hack to replace O'Connor.

I think the Dems should have the spin machine going to declare this a victory. "We forced the president to actually present a candidate who was not a divider, and who will hopefully uphold the ideals of freedom and liberty for all Americans."

The O'Connor replacement scares me though, I still can't see Bush not at least trying to throw a bone to the hardcore "conservatives."

I think taking the spin away from the Republicans is something Dems should do alot more of.
