Besides NYU (which I've posted about before), what are some excellent schools for journalism in the NYC area or close to NYC? I am not looking for one of those "only 1400 on SATs" schools. Something that is not "the" most difficult school to get into, but not a school that lets anyone off the street in.
And if possible, any school in a major city in the New England area (preferably MA or CT, besides Boston University)?
Well neither of these are in New York but the best journalism school is the University of Missouri. I know Ball State (where I go) also has a very good program . It's hard to tell because Ball State gets overlooked quite a bit. If you are looking at Telecommunications, it is one of the best in the nation, but I understand the wanting to stay close to home thing.

At the west end of NYS: St. Bonaventure University (about 90 minutes south of Buffalo)has a great reputation in print and broadcast media. I majored there back when it was just Journalism and not Mass Communication.
It's a Catholic sponsored university (ie it receives outside funding as well as from Catholic sources) and stresses a liberal arts education. I am grateful that classes like philosophy, theology and the classics were required when I attended because it gave me a richer understanding of so many things. And, when you're a writer, that kind of perspective is invaluable.
Several graduates are doing quite well all over the country Two "notables" include Vicki Corderi of NBC who attended there awhile--I think she was a year or so behind me...? She may have transferred her junior year????
One of my own classmates was Neil Cavuto who has a show on the Fox News Channel.

Ohio University has one of the top journalism programs in the country. It's not the area you're looking for but the Scripps School is top notch.
And OU is one of the best party schools in the country -- Halloween in Athens is LEGENDARY
