Australian opera and musial comedy star June Bronhill died today. Her most famous roles included "The Merry Widow" and Maria in the long running original Australian company of "The Sound of Music" (a show she later revisited in the West End, this time as the Mother Abbess opposite Petula Clark). One of her final stage appearances was as Miss Jones in "How to Succeed..." with Tom Burlinson in Sydney in '93.

I was devastated when I saw this on the news. One of the true Great Australian performers.

She will be dearly missed.

I was even more shocked when my Mother revealed she knew who she was...

THAT is an achievement in itself!

She was a huge star in the '50s and 60s. When she left her hometown of Broken Hill as a young singer starting out, her name was June Gough. She took the name Bronhill as a tribute to her hometown and all the people there who believed in her.

I didn't know that Pussycat.

That's such a lovely little piece of information.

I believe that the good people of Broken Hill raised the money to allow the young June to study overseas.

She will be missed. I am sure that she will not be forgotten.
