Oh for crap's sake.
I always stay at Jizz Villa.

What room are you staying in?
It's a perfectly legitimate question. Some of Harlem is sketchy, as are other parts of all five boroughs. I live on the upper east side, though the little maps in taxis call where I live Spanish Harlem. And there are a few blocks even there that I'm wary of.
But you're staying in a well-trafficked area, not too far from a subway line, so you'll be fine. It's a very interesting neighborhood.

I'm pretty sure Asians aren't allowed to stay in Harlem.

Harlem hostels are hostile to Asians.

Too bad Asians aren't allowed to use Google maps, either.
Make good use of hopstop.com. Click on New York, then enter your start and end points. It'll give you subway directions and walking maps.
The 2/3 trains from 125th Street will get you to 42nd Street/Times Square in about 15-20 minutes. Harlem is not nearly as dangerous after dark as it was when I first moved to New York 20 years ago but any neighborhood in New York can be dangerous. I don't say that to scare you, but to just make you aware to always be alert. Just keep your eyes open and avoid dark, empty side streets and you should be fine.
Be nice to Fiyero!
