re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

Auggie27, when you say she was a joke for much of her career, I'm not sure what you mean. Unless you mean from people like Bette Midler and others who were threatened by her talent. The public made the Carpenters the biggest selling American recording artists of the 70's. In Japan (the second biggest recording buying market in the world), they are the biggest selling recording artists of all-time! Their records continue to sell, today, and have never gone out of circulation.

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

AndyHardy - "Little Girl Blue" was not from Karen's solo album, it was recorded for a television special, and included on a compilation CD that Richard put together (primarily for the Japanese market). Also, I should add that while Herb Alpert and Richard were less than thrilled with Karen's solo effort, it was her decision to shelve it, not A&M Records' decision.

If I was a girl and I could sing like anyone in the world, it would be Karen Carpenter. What an amazing gift she had.

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

Feodor, thanks for the "Little Girl Blue" clarification.

I believe Auggie's statement about her (and her brother) being a "joke" was in regard to their wholesomeness and being perceived as being "un-cool". True, they were (and are) best selling artists, but I can recall people joking about her recording of "Superstar" when so many others (Midler, etc.) did their recordings of "Superstar" in such a sexual way. I prefer Karen's.

Thanks for this thread. Glad to know they were nice when you met them. I'm looking forward to going home and putting on some Karen

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

Barry Manilow was treated the same way - and yet how many had his career - or musical awareness, for that matter?

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

Speaking of Manilow - Richard passed on "Trying To Get The Feeling Again" and passed it along to Manilow who had a big hit with it. Several years after Karen's death, Richard was putting together a Karaoke CD for Japan, and came across Karen's work vocal (which she would do in one take and Richard would use it to do his arrangement. She would always redo the vocal for the final track). Anyway, he put an arrangement around it and released it on a compilation disc (same one as "Little Girl Blue"), and it's superb. I can't even listen to Manilow's version anymore (and I really like Manilow).

Manilow's greatest work was as an arranger and pianist. Listen to Bette Midler's second album (titled simply, "Bette Midler").

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

Karen's voice was so pure and perfect that it was almost haunting to listen to. I'd also compare Linda Eder's voice to that of Karen - not that they sound similar, but in the perfection of their voices.

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

Except for when I'm listening to her Christmas CD which I love, I always think of the sunshine, the cool breeze and listening to 'Make Believe It's Your First Time' in Cabo when I think of Karen.

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

"Superstar" was made fun of at the time partly because the recording changed "sleep with you" to "be with you." I do remember The Carpenters being ridiculed quite a bit in the seventies. It was not the thing at all to like them then; many people considered them on a par with the Osmond Brothers or Lawrence Welk. It took a while before Karen's unique voice and Richard's sophisticated arrangements and immaculate recording techniques were appreciated.

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

I must have travelled in completely different circles (well, I was doing theater back then), but other than Bette Midler (who made plenty of jokes for which she has since apologized), I don't remember the jokes. And, somebody appreciated them in the 70's, since only The Bee Gees and Elton John sold more records, during the entire decade.

Yes, Midler in concert then would say things like "Jeez, what's with Karen Carpenter? Nice voice, but her drumming sucks!" I remember one year Karen presented a Grammy to Bette, whose first words were something like "I wasn't sure if you were going to hand me the statue or hit me over the head with it."

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

Oh, her voice was like silk. She put so much natural emotion into her singing, and it seemed effortless. And I loved the fact that she played the drums. Back then, that was pretty "feminist."

"The Uninvited Guest" is perhaps Karen's most hauntingly perfect songs. Gives me chills every time I listen to it!

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

I used to think they were wholesome and "goody-goody", which is why I never listened to tehm before. Then I heard "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft", and after hearing this song, I thought "There is absolutely NO WAY these two did not smoke a Big Doobie before recording this song".
That, and "Intermission"
"We'll be right back, after we got to the bathroom"
Not only is that clever, but the harmonies...(eargasm)
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

ditto ditto! echo echo! karen was the vocalist of the century. i'm still amazed that richard and karen did ALL the background vocals on almost every one of their albums.

i'll NEVER forget being in the car, listening to the radio, when it was announced that karen had passed. they played GOODBYE TO LOVE. i stopped the car and just bawled like a baby.

My older sister used to play to "Superstar" over and over. We both still love to listen to her.

re: Karen Carpenter appreciation thread

Wow! I just stumbled upon this and I am presently suprised by the out pour of love. I personally consider Karen one if not the greatest singers ever. Soley due to her pure and crstyal voice. I adore her individually and as a duo with her brother in every sense of the word. As previously said, their Christmas Album is pure classic and if you haven't checked out anyother music besides their christmas album I strongly recommend it.

Karen Carpenter v. Donna Summer :)

If Karen Carpenter is boring, give me boring. Her voice is a perfect instrument that cuts right through me, when I hear it.
And enjoy the beauty - all the joy and beauty - that a Merry Christmas can bring to you!

Karen v. Donna. Lets talk apples and oranges. No comparison.

Karen Carpenter v. Donna Summer :)

Karen's extraordinary contralto was unique. You only have to hear one note to know who's singing it.

I often think about her mainly because the Carpenters get played so much in my shere. Losses like that you never really get over.

For anyone who hasn't heard The Rainbow Connection off the AS Time Goes By Album do yourself a favour and get it, fabulous cover of an amazing song......
