Kerry beating Bush in polls

A CBS poll out today puts Kerry beating Bush by 8 points:

Kerry 49
Bush 41

If you add McCain to the Kerry ticket, the margin of victory is 14 points:

Kerry-McCain 53
Bush-Cheney 39

Kerry is beating Bush in 17 of the 20 of the battleground states. Originally, 12 states were considered to be toss-ups but as the year has progressed, Bush's support in traditional Republican states has slipped. Now states like Louisiana, once considered by pundits and the campaigns to be Bush territory, are now battlegrounds. After devoting $25 million in positive ads in these 20 states, Kerry's favorability ratings are higher than Bush's. Kerry also polls higher than Bush there on the question of leadership -- this is obviously a major theme of the Bush campaign.

In traditional Democratic states, Kerry is beating Bush by double digits. For example, California's margin is 20 points.

As we head into June, the bottom line is the base is secure and growing for Kerry.

re: kerry beating bush in polls

and while it must be comforting to read that, you might want to keep in mind that cbs and zogby are the only polls that have it anywhere near that far apart. the general view is about 3 points up for kerry which is within the stated +/- for the polls. but hey, if you really want to get excited you ought to remember that at this time in '88 dukakis held a 16 point lead over gw1.

plus, since kerry is getting out and speaking again after having holed up for the last few weeks look for his number to drop the way they have consistently throughout the campaign when he gets out and speaks. also, keep in mind that most of the slippage reported has more to do with bush losing republicans, who will eventually come back home. but enjoy the cbs poll.

You're almost right, Papa. I remember George HW Bush being at 90 percent approval ratings in early 1991 before he crashed and burned. But in this case, the polls also show movement of independents toward Kerry. This must be very disconcerting news for your friends in the White House.

c'mon, zola, you can't count bubba in this. the man was a feak of nature as a politician. his kind comes along once in a generation. i disagreed with nearly everything he said, but damn i had to admire his style. but just for the record, had lee atwater not gotten his karmic cumupence in '91, bubba would have never gotten anywhere.

the independents is a concern, but i won't be concerned until i see how the numbers look after kerry's been out front and center for a solid month. he did take most of may off and just sit back while gw's folks were busy tripping stumbling and bumbling.

Agree completely! I was just amplifying your point that polls are meaningless in determining an outcome 5 months from now.

Still, they are significant in nudging a campaign or a candidate in one direction or another now. It will be interesting to see how each guy positions himself in June given these numbers.

re: kerry beating bush in polls

i don't think you're going to see much of a change from bush. they're confident that the economy's gonna keep chugging (+4.4 in the 1st qtr of 2004 and up over half a million jobs on the year whether that means what i'd like it to mean or not is open to debate) and that when people meet john kerry and ge to know him that they'll either recoil in horror or fall asleep. either way it keeps them from the polls. unless gw's down big time, they're gonna "stay the course."

the thing to watch though is the slowly increasing drumbeat from the left of the "bring the troops home now" movement. that's kerry's biggest enemy besides his own speechifying. al gore's recent screamfest for moveon.org didn't endear him to anyone either and was an example of primary politics still being waged during a general election. even though it's early, that kinda thing can be a drag on the party. depending on how things break for the democratic party could be key to kerry's future.

**update** see the recent "win without war" statement...a coalition of 42 left bank groups including the sierra club, moveon.org, the naacp and the now. those are core constituencies saying clearly and unambiguously, "run away, run away!"

Papa, don't worry so much about supposed divisions within the liberal base. We are unified solidly to get rid of GWB. Anyway, we always fight with each other -- no news there and no way to exploit this through the usual divide and conquer strategy.

You all need to pay more attention to the infighting in the GOP ranks: Hastert vs. McCain is but the tip of that rank iceberg.

oh trust me, zola, i know darn well that these idiots would happily fiddle while rome burned (that was not an empire joke, i swear). like you said before, it's 5 months away. which will give us plenty of time for "he said, he said" and a few "man on dog" moments from santorum.

the thing that gives me a lot more hope is that the gop 527's are not even online yet. once those floodgates open it's gonna be all kerry all the time ad-wise in the battleground states. and everybody knows we've got deeper pockets.

i take heart in the idea that deep down, our loonies are a smidge more rational than your loonies. just a smidge, mind you. but with a true anti-war candidate in the mix like ralphie boy, you're still gonna have the true believers who run that route. more than you think because kerry has an amazing ability to turn people off and turn on people (not turn them on, but whirl like a dervish to strike).

Papa, it's starting to scare me that we agree these days more than not.

One thing to consider: Kerry is a terrific closer. He ran an amazingly inept race against Weld in 1996. The former governor was actually ahead most of the summer. Then, a number of forces lined up, Kerry engaged, and he ended up winning by 7 points.

But, you're right. There are so many variables out there now. For example, what happens if all the job losses are erased by October? (possible) Or, what happens if Osama is found and captured?

re: kerry beating bush in polls

hee hee hee, zola. i agree with most of my friends on nearly everything but who to vote for and why.

i really think that people are over-estimating the osama factor. they'd have to whip him out in the last 2 weeks, i think, otherwise his novelty would get played out with 24 hour news cycles and the strength of the punditocracy.

the economy probably will be completely turned around by the fall, but that doesn't mean a thing as perception is more imporant than reality when it come to the economy. the economy had in fact turned around for his dad in '92, but that didn't do daddy much good.

watching kerry's speech tonight though i thought that he's not saying he'd do anything different, just that he'd do it better. plus he put a big ol' pricetag on getting nato involved which was already almost a foregone conclusion. gw might still blow that, but if he does succeed, then he kicked out one of the legs of kerry's master plan from today. i think that strategy is as risky as it is cautious. by not staking out his own positions he leaves himself open as gw1 did for the opponent to swoop in and steal all his positions. national elections are not won by the guy standing there yelling defiantly, "oh yeah, well that was my idea, dammit!"

jfk2 has a flaw that a lot of politicians have: when he supports something it's the single greatest idea, policy or invention in the history of mankind. the only problem is, that johnny boy changes his mind more than mrs mambo picking an outfit which leaves him with this record of statements that are clearly and diametrically opposed to his current views. which in and of itself is not a big problem as he is a politician, but he tends to insist that instead of having changed his mind that those earlier statements simply do not exist. or his pals do it for him while he blames overstatements on his pesky speechwriters.

but he is a killer finisher and that does scare the living ****e outta me.

Still, in all, I'd rather have a man who changes his mind (because, you know, who doesn't? Admit your mistakes, Shrub, instead of pretending that you knew all along it was going to turn out this way and it's all working to plan) and a man who is boring than a man who is so swayed by the intolerant people in this country that he will actively support and enforce making sure that our Constitution encodes forever hate and the creation of a second class of people. Now I know it's just talk to soothe his religious right constituents, but talk is powerful in politics and sways a lot of empty minds in our country...and I, for one, have to admit a lot of shock and dismay that anyone on this list would still consider Bush their prime candidate. Quite honestly, it makes me question what you really think of "them thar gays singin' and dancin' onstage." Fiscal policies aside, is Bush really the man you want running our country?

i do support bush and will be voting for him as i have said time and again on this board and have qualified my support and explained it over and over. the opinions are there for anyone who wants to spend a little time doing research rather than resorting to childish attempts to demonize. tolerance is a two way street.

I didn't accuse you of intolerance. But it does make me wonder how you could accept and support Bush when he's shown what he's willin to do re: them thar gays.
And, for the record, I come from an extremely conservative southern family prone to using that exact phrase. I also know exactly how the religious right paints candidates like Bush and Kerry and the tactics they'll use to mobilize those votes...and, quite frankly, you just seem way smarter than the people I'm referring to.

please explain to me what this statement means then if it does not accuse me of intolerance and also suggest a questionable educational if not linguistic background? not only does it do all of that, but by the use of the quotations it also suggests that the comment in quotations is one that i have made before.

re: kerry beating bush in polls

A brilliant fella like Papa doesn't need the likes o'me to defend him, but for what it's worth, I know from my 7 months at this board that he's no homophobe. Though it's more fun, and makes for a lively (if easy) debate, it's a little simplistic to assume every Bush supporter reflects a monolithic set of beliefs. In fact, there are even out n'proud gay folk -- not necessarily the Log Cabin boys, or Tammy Bruce and Andrew Sulivan -- who cast their vote in the elephant column.

In my experience, particularly as a New Yorker: in the post 9/11 world, people have more complex responses to the global and domestic issues than ever before. It's easy to call all such responses reactionary, and at times I've painted everyone with that brush. I must look no further than my own little psyche. I'm a rabid card-carrying liberal who once almost got thrown off a Manhattan rooftop cocktail party for agreeing with the US handling of that Walker Lindt boy, you know, the "American Taliban." (As soon as he became a victim of "mental illness," and not strongly held political belief, my bile rose...) As much as I loathe this administration, I try -- harder than every before -- to be careful not to over-judge those who feel compelled to cast their votes for it. Call me Pollyanna (or Ishmael), but I think the division is so deep and wide right now, it behooves us to look for common ground when we can. This board sometimes serves to do just that (even if it's Idina vs. Kristin uniting us), and for it, I'm grateful.

I always find these discussions when it's too late to make a coherent statement about the original topic. papa usually covers my feelings better than I could.

You can always tell a newer person from the timbre of their comments towards those of differing opinions on this board. It's nice that the long time members/frequent posters of the board have developed a mutual respect, though often differing in opinion.

I remember recently coming in here with both guns blazing in defense of GWB... then I realized that there's no point. I will continue to defend my own (and side with others who share) my opinion on this matter. In the long run though, I think the majority of us have well educated, and intentioned, points.

It is a shame to see an otherwise engaging thread brought down to a level of ignorance such as contained in bwaysinger's post.

re: kerry beating bush in polls

why thanks, Ckeaton. I appreciate being called ignorant. As I have explained to Papa privately, but will now say to you since you want to make sure it gets dredged up again, I wasn't calling him bigoted. However, when you sign on with a candidate and endorse him, you support their entire policy for good or ill...and while I can understand that you might support the Republican ideal of fiscal policy or international relations, I am surprised someone could have such a love of musical theatre and be a generally liberal person socially and not have very serious doubts about supporting Bush come election time.
But hey, since I'm obviously ignorant, you can just shrug it off and keep supporting him.

a level of ignorance such as contained in bwaysinger's post

Ah, my trigger-happy fellow Broadway lover... Answer me one question, will you?

Can a person themselve be intellegent and well-spoken, yet occasionally post something ignorant?

I take it on a case by case basis. In your case, your initial post on this thread was pretty ignorant.

Ignorant of the history of these individuals.
Ignorant of the creed by which many try to adhere when posting.

I myself, have made several ignorant posts in the past, (which Namo is always right behind me to point out) yet I try to think of myself as a non-ignorant person.

So drink a mojito, and revel in the fact that it is Friday. Don't be so tense.

re: kerry beating bush in polls

Unfortunately, I'm working a temp job at the moment that doesn't quite endorse Mojito Friday, but I am hopeful.
Of course people can make ridiculous comments or appear misinformed or just plain stupid.

For the record, I was quite aware that Papa is supporting of several issues that would be at odds with the Republican platform. I never directly addressed Papa in my post. If an attack on him specifically was inherently implied because of the placement of the post, I apologize.
But I still stand by my belief that anyone who is voting for Bush should look long and hard at the platform and the things that, by proxy, they are supporting when they vote for him.
You can disagree with part of a person's policy, but your vote ensures that the entire Republican platform gains legitimacy...and that includes things that are socially and (in my own opinion, not endorsed by the religious right or my particular denomination) morally reprehensible.
#24

re: kerry beating bush in polls

see, bway, i just consider that having a country that's got some moral reprehensibility in it is more important than not having a country at all which where i see a vote for kerry putting us. i'd rather have a leader that's willing to take a stand and weather the storm for it even when it's wrong than one who sticks his finger up, sees which way the wind is blowing and then adjusts his views accordingly. maybe if i had any faith that any of kerry's positions would outlast the innagural speech should he win i might feel differently. yeah, i know, bush's didn't last either, but hey, 9/11 changed everything and everybody. boiled down to the base essentials, i prefer a policy of preemption to one of containment out of a sheer desperate desire for survival. is it selfish? maybe.

Well, gosh, Papa, no one can fault you for having an opinion. What I find funny is that Bush's unwillingness to compromise or comprehend that his immobility on many issues is at the root of his declining approval rating. Kerry may waffle but I'd rather know that someone was sitting there willing to listen and, heaven forbid, change his mind on something when he is obviously out of step with a large group of people.
