Killer Avatars

Her name is Karla Homolka. She's the wife of notorious (to Canadians, anyway) serial rapist/killer Paul Bernardo. In the early '90s, long story short, they kidnapped several girls, drugged them, raped them (some of the rapes were videotaped, and for many - if not all - of them, Karla was the prominent rapist while Paul gave the orders and recorded it) and then killed them. The most notorious fact was that Paul didn't like that Karla wasn't a virgin, and as a wedding present, she offered up her own virginal sister. And then she drugged and raped her while Paul watched. (And I believe videotaped it as well.)
The biggest controversy in the case was that Karla's defense claimed she was a battered wife and that Paul forced her to help him lure, rape and kill the girls against her will. This is in debate though, for several reasons: a) In the videos, Karla is shown enjoying and being a willing participant in the rapes. (This could be an act, of course.); b) Paul was suspected of raping women prior to meeting Karla, yet the violence did not escalate into murder until Karla was in the picture; and c) there were at least two victims whom Karla lured on her own, while Paul was at work, which questions how "forced" she was into this.
And she's served her full term, and is getting out next month. Paul's behind bars for life, but the battered wife defense only got her 12 years.

I remember them.
Edit: Didn't read the post carefully enough.

Posted: 6/15/05 at 5:55pmFunny you should say that, Beav, because it was just made into a feature film starring Laura Prepon ("That '70s Show") and it's going to be released later on this year. (Out of "consideration" for the victims' families, the Canadian release was delayed until the fall so not to coincide with her release.)

Wow. We have a case almost identical to that in Australia. Right down to the battered wife excuse. And she's about to get out also.
Weird...

Posted: 6/15/05 at 6:05pmI remember that now, Tiff. It never registered that they were Canadian. The rest of you are such nice people, though.

Posted: 6/15/05 at 6:10pmWhat I remember about the case was that the US was getting the news about the case, but the Canadians were not. There was a blackout of information (according to their law and British law, by the way). I remember reading an article about it whilst in America, visiting relatives. I was around 17 at the time of that visit and thus the trial.

Posted: 6/15/05 at 6:15pmYup, there was a nation-wide blackout of the information. Right now, we have the Robert Pickton trial which is doing a similar blackout. He's charged with luring prostitutes in Vancouver's downtown eastside back to his pig farm to party, and then raping and killing them and putting their bodies into a woodchipper on his pig pen to destroy the evidence. He's been charged with 27 murders, but is suspected of having killed upward of 69 women, all prostitutes and transients who were reported missing but ignored by the local police.

Well, considering the nature of our PMs, our avatars added a new...dimension...to the conversation.
And I thought iflit changed her avatar to a peace sign, further confusing those who read the Disneyland thread a bit late.

Posted: 6/15/05 at 7:13pmI don't get "Autopsy" in Canada. What's it about, and how did it relate to the Homolka case? Sounds interesting.

ok autopsy, on each episode it features 5 or 6 homicide cases and on each case there are people who analyze it, usually the forensic pathologist for that case is one of the interviewees, the show is similar to Forensic Files on CourtTV. anyway one of the episodes featureed the Homolka case...it started out telling what was going on the night of Tammy's murder, there was a party and Tammy wanted to stay up late with her sister and her sister's husband. so the interviewees would continue to go into analysis of how she was murdered, why her sister and the husband did that to her, how they caught Tammy's killers using forensic evidence that kind of stuff...Autopsy is such a great show i wish they would air more eps

Sounds interesting! I watch a lot of those types of shows on A&E as well...Medical Detectives, Cold Case Files, City Confidential, etc. I get sucked in each time! If you like this sort of stuff, you should check out www.crimelibrary.com (sponsored, or run by, CourtTV). And if you were interested in the Homolka/Bernardo killings in particular, Stephen Williams has published two books on her - "Invisible Darkness" and "Pact With The Devil".
<-- has too much time on her hands
