I'm gonna be moving out to Palmdale, CA (approx. 30 minutes from LA) and I was wondering if any Californians have any advice for someone who is a New Yorker at heart...
Oh, Justice, I'm the same way, even if I have been born and raised in Los Angeles.
Driving Tips
- You better have a driver's license, for starters
- However, half the time, pretend you never learned how to drive properly, because you'll never get anywhere if you do. Quick passing (on the left and right), and for god's sake, if there is no traffic, 65 MPH as a speed limit unofficially (IMO) becomes 75.
- The freeways suck. Almost all the time. If you map things online, and they give you "25 minutes" as time to get there, add on an extra 15, just in case. In fact, add 15 minutes to anything you map between 0-45 minutes, and 30 mins for 45 and up.
- Avoid the 10E, 24 hours a day.
If you must venture into traffic, check before hand at traffic.tann.net
- Don't jaywalk, you may get a ticket, more so in Beverly Hills. Otherwise, just be careful. California drivers aren't used to people sprinting across the street.
A Good parking space is a gift from God.
GAS is expensive as the devil. I got it 'cheap' yesterday at 2.41. So be prepared.
Ummmm, I think that covers it for now. Welcome to LA! It's actually not so bad, but that's the advice I have thus far - say hello when you come in.
Palmdale has a really nice library.......you can always judge how a city feels about itself by how much it puts into its library......
Chances are if you jaywalk, the cars will speed up....so you won't have to worry about the ticket.

30 minutes from LA? i live in santa clarita, which is about half way between palmdale and LA. it takes me 45 minutes to an hour to get to LA. if there is absolutely no traffic, it will take about half an hour. just a heads up! hope you like it here.
oh yeah, and dont be surprised if an entire freeway is going 5 mph because someone is way off on the side changing a tire. for some reason everyone feels the need to slow down and stare at it.
