I have no idea how much this project would potentially cost, but I think it's a fabulous idea. Something as small as adding musical tones to the turnstiles would be a baby step in the right direction of actually improving a rider's experience. It's a fun and clever suggestion, at least. LCD Soundsystem’s Frontman Wants To Bring Pleasant Sounds To The NYC Subway
How about playing the score for "Subways Are For Sleeping" in the background?
I imagine that this would drive the token booth clerks insane. Though however when shopping in FAO Swartz when they had that huge clock thing there that played that annoying song constantly, I asked one of the cashiers, "How do you put up with that song day in and day out?" She looked at me with a look of confusion, "What song?" she asked.
It really doesn't seem any less annoying.
It actually sounds really cool because the sounds will change with each turn of the style. Unfortunately, I don't think the MTA should put funds into something like this until they are secure financially (i.e. not in our lifetimes).

I like LCD so I think it would be cool.
This sounds like a really cool idea and I love that NY has the ambition for these civic/public art projects, but coming from a city with a much cleaner and easier to navigate system of subway stations (albeit, nowhere near the size or scale of NY's), wouldn't the money be better spent on maintenance, cleaning, improving signage etc?
