Where is a good website that I can go to that I can look at certain state's labor laws? I have looked a few and have not found what I am looking for.

To see if in South Carolina, if employers have to give lunch breaks.

Oh, spidey, is the employer from hell still mistreating you guys???? I swear, you need a new job.

Let us know what you find out. I'm 99% sure every state requires that employers give lunch breaks. Unpaid, sure, but still a break.

I think that is also true.
I guess it depends on how long the day is but for an average work day, I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.

Well, today he told us that either we have to

A) Always bring our own lunch to eat at our desk while we work
B) Choose whatever he wants to order food from (which is always expensive things like AppleBees, etc) and eat at our desk while we work
C) Go Hungry

And he does pay us for the supposed "lunch break"

Just asking here- would you rather have this supposed lunch break- where you can eat at your desks and get paid or would you rather have a "real" lunch break and not get paid?

12 hour days? Where the h*ll do you work?! And you don't get ANY break!?! That's major BS...I'd quit.

Well, I liked getting paid for the "breaks," but if a patient walks in (which is every 10 minues), I have to scarf down my food whenever there is a window between them (by then my food is ice cold and I start feeling sick from shoving the food down my throat so quickly).

I work at a doctor's office and no . . . we don't get a break of any kind.

SweetQ: Spidey's told us about this job before, and I've already gotten all over him about the 12 hour days and other things that I'm sure break all kinds of labor laws... He says it's the best paying job he can find in his area. =(

Not sure about SC - but in my state, I believe a 30 minute meal break (does not have to be paid though) must be granted for every six straight hours of work.

Spidey - do they at least let you break for the loo? Next thing you know, your Applebee's order will come with a box of Depends!

I guess I've been very lucky...the only states where I've had day-jobs were NJ, NY, and CA, and they all require breaks be given. Not so in SC, apparently:

Rath: I know! I was shocked! I knew it was a State issue (i.e., that there is no Federal law requiring breaks, etc.), but I mistakenly assumed most if not all states would have a law requiring some sort of break! Crazy.

I can't speak for all states, but I learned firsthand a few years back when I got a job at a brokerage firm in St. Louis. I wasn't told until I actually started there that there was no lunch break, and there were all sorts of draconian regarding the eating of lunch period. I no longer work there, or live in the state of Missouri for that matter. At any rate, back when I worked there I did some research with the Board of Labor and found out that it was pretty much the same in Missouri as it in South Carolina.
