A lot of people dump their feces onto CHICAGO but, I must say, that it does not deserve it. It's definitely a better musical movie than either RENT or THE PRODUCERS, that's for sure.
Chicago is my favorite out of the recent musical-turned-movie movies of the last few years. There wasn't a weak performance and I really enjoyed the staging of the numbers.
I saw DREAMGIRLS for the first time tonight and was reminded of the time I went to see CHICAGO, around this time four years ago.
Re CHICAGO: I really enjoyed the opening number and the first half of the film, but, like the stage version, the movie doesn't fare well in the second act. And I really hated the finale. Their act was so cheesy and dull, I had a hard time believing they were able to get booked at the Chicago Theater.
And I still don't think John C. Reilly and Queen Latifah deserved their nominations.
Personally, Chicago was a snoozefest for me, but I also have an irrational hatred of Renee Zellwegger, so that contributes a lot to that...
But I understand why people enjoy the film.
Loved the film and Catherine. Oooooooo, Catherine in the lingerie. Grrrrrowl indeed.
lol, Spider.
Cathrine was amazing in that movie.
I love Chicago. I love the clever staging of the numbers. It is my favorite more recent movie musical(still haven't seen Dreamgirls). I don't see why Queen Latifah got an oscar-nomination.

Pinguin, I also have an irrational hatred of Renee Zellwegger!! We should start a club and make t-shirts!
I loathe Renee Zellwegger, but for some reason I can stomach her in Chicago.

Glad you liked Chicago.
I re-watched the film last week, and Chicago, Dreamgirls, and Moulin Rouge are the best musicals on film in the past 30 years (meaning, basically, everything produced since Cabaret).
I think Chicago's "message" (fame at any cost, and the media's frenzied love affair with scandals) seemed to resonate more for me than the "message" in Dreamgirls (the price of fame, and the choices and sacrifices made to attain it). I think that's a reflection of the basic stories being told in both cases, not in the execution of either film.
And Moulin Rouge is a case of wildly imaginative and revolutionary "style over content." It succeeds with an extremely simple love story, very few plot points, and then heaps loads of visual and aural "candy" all over it. It was touted as a reinvention of the genre... and yet, no one has attempted a similar film since.
How funny! I re-watched this last night for the first time in ages. I still love it, but I'm able to see its flaws better now.
Personally, I think SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT is the best musical of the past 30 years. No joke.
I was talking about musicals with actual live people on screen, and I wasn't considering Disney animated movies either.
But if you want to count them, be my guest!
Or is it "Be Our Guest?"
As others have said, I also have a strange, irrational hatred for Renee Zellweger. She bothers me. I don't know what it is. But I did enjoy Chicago the first couple times I watched it. THen it just got kind of dull.
As for Moulin Rouge...after ten minutes, I was shaking my head. I don't understand the concept and I don't understand why people think it's valid. I thought it was a joke. And not in a good way. I thought it was awful, and painful to watch for the most part. I turned it off. And tha'ts not an easy thing for me to do when Ewan McGregor is involved.
See, b12b*, unlike some people, I'm not the exclusive kind. Therefore, I was including ALL movie musicals, be they animated or live action.
*Or is it "Uncle F*CKa"?

SOUTH PARK is the best movie musical.
I still haven't seen the whole CHICAGO movie. And I haven't seen anything of the RENT movie yet.
I have, thankfully, seen DREAMGIRLS.
Hmmm, haven't seen Chicago in a while. It's one of those movies that is visually stunning, and leaves you very entertained...but after a few viewings, it becomes a bit dull. But I still appreciate it for Catherine's awesome performance. And count me in among those who despise Renee.
I third South Park as the best movie musical. Seriously, it's completely brilliant.
If you want to see an eye candy movie, Moulin Rouge is the one to pick. Yeah, it's plot-thin, but the design makes me drool. Especially the costumes. Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie totally deserved their Oscar for costume design.

Their act was so cheesy and dull, I had a hard time believing they were able to get booked at the Chicago Theater.
That's kind of the point. They weren't booked because they were amazing talents, they were booked because of their notoriety.
"but after a few viewings, it becomes a bit dull."
Can't that be said for most movies?
Do you always have that "first time" experience with other films?
Come on.
And SM2---Your comments can be really annoying sometimes.

I loved everything about it! Before Dreamgirls, that was the last time I recall people clapping in the theatre.
I respectfully disagree about the nominations for Latifah and Reilly being unwarranted. To me, Catherine WAS the movie, but I thought they were excellent as well.
