One of my favorite performances of all time is his inimitably misty-eyed and bitter old queen at the bar in MAGNOLIA.
"It's a dangerous thing to confuse children with angels"
One more angel in Heaven. And NASHVILLE is what it is largely because of his immense contributions. A true talent.

Posted: 9/17/09 at 10:04amHis songs in NASHVILLE are wonderful. That wonderful ghastly ballad "For The Sake Of The Children" always makes me laugh, and takes on an extra edge when you realize that the character singing the song did in fact dump his wife, not worrying about the kids.

You can take that meta-narrative one step further since Gibson himself WROTE the (intentionally) wretched song (with some lyrical help from Elaine May apparently) as did most of the performers in the film (thus Carradine's Oscar for "I'm Easy" - over "How Lucky Can You Get" (P.S."New York, New York" wasn't even nominated for Best Song!). I'll listen watch it again today and think of Henry (and laugh a little, or a lot!).

Yes, Roscoe, you are correct.
Carradine beat Kander & Ebb's "How Lucky Can You Get?" from FUNNY LADY, not Kander & Ebb's "New York, New York". I knew he beat a (better) K&E song, just 2 years off!
And in checking the database, I noticed that in 1985 "Suprise, Suprise" from A CHORUS LINE was actually nominated for Best Song?! Goes to show how much this award means!

Well, we disagree on "I'm Easy" deserving the Oscar. But "New York New York" really should have gotten a nomination at the very least.
And I'm often surprised that Gibson's "We Must Be Doing Something Right To Last 200 Years" hasn't been picked up by the right wingnuts.

I love "I'm Easy" and NASHVILLE is one of the my favorite films of all time (and find PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION a lovely pseudo-sequel, watch them in succession (if you have the time!) and there are many wonderful parallels) but not as much as "How Lucky Can You Get"? AND I think the FUNNY LADY song works better in the respective film than "I'm Easy" does, and that's what the award is intended to be for (as opposed to the best song, irrelevant of context). "I'm Easy" is a better SINGLE, or pop song, but "How Lucky Can You Get?" advances plot, showcases star AND is a thrilling musical moment, whereas I'm not so sure "I'm Easy" accomplishes as much. I mean, Lily KNEW he was easy all along and that's why she let him seduce her, didn't she?
"I'm Easy" is CERTAINLY better than "Now That We're In Love", "Richard's Window" and "Theme from MAHOGANY", no question!

Well, we certainly disagree on "I'm Easy" which I think fits brilliantly into NASHVILLE. It may not advance the plot (you're quite right about that) but it does illuminate and sum up the character of the singer, it certainly does showcase Keith Carradine, and is a thrilling musical moment as the assorted characters in the room realize that they are (or are not) the person being sung to. As a song and as a film moment it kicks FUNNY LADY's largely forgotten tired old ass, plain and simple, I'd say, but opinions will differ.
Off topic of course, but I think the Oscar for Best Song should go to, well, the best song, regardless of how it is used in the film. Where exactly does it say anywhere how Oscar winning songs must work in their respective films? Does that mean that songs from credit sequences are less worthy than others? And let's not forget that "Over The Rainbow," probably the greatest song ever written for a Hollywood movie, doesn't advance the plot at all and was very nearly cut from THE WIZARD OF OZ film as a result.
