I adore her, and my friend had no clue who she was. I was shocked. I though everyone knew of this fabulous woman.
Who are celebs you thought everyone knew of but were shocked when someone didn't have a clue who they were?

I was in a directing class in college in which some asked of Bernadette: "She's pretty ...who is she?"
What can you say to that? In a theatre class?

Ugh. How do you not know who Bernadette is if you do theatre?
I once had to explain Brooke Shields to someone.

Posted: 10/17/05 at 10:50amIt's unfair, really...I recognize so many faces--I have a really good memory for that...even if it's only one time, which has embarassed me more than once. I once waved to Seth Myers from SNL because I thought I had dated him (god knows I would), but when he came up to me, I was like..."Oh...I guess I don't know you.." Hours later, it occurred to me who he was. Oy...I missed a golden opportunity methinks...

When I said Rita Hayworth was my all time sexiest actress, and there was not a person who could even picture her.
Not that I really expected everyone to know her (college kids in the 90's), but it was just so sad. I figured they had at least seen "The Shawshank Redemption"

Posted: 10/17/05 at 10:53amFor those of you too new to remember, there was a regular poster here who did not know who Julie Harris or Vanessa Redgrave were. No kidding....no, REALLY.

Posted: 10/17/05 at 10:55amSee, that's so weird...when I was a kid, I went out of my way to watch all the old movies--of course it helped that my mom liked them too...so I was watching Hitchcock and Bette and Joan when I was still in my single digits...It has made a huge difference in my theatre education. How can you be an actor if you can't give the director a little Mrs. Danvers when he/she asks you? Or a little Clifton Webb? Or....

I'm sure we have many posters on this board who don't know who Julie Harris and Vanessa Redgrave are.
I had to explaing Gwen Verdon to someone in an old thread. They were talking about Sweet Charity as if Applegate was the firs to play the role, and when I wrote about Verdon they wrote: Gwen who?

Posted: 10/17/05 at 11:15amLike it was hundreds of years ago! We're not asking you to know who Katherine Cornell and Laurette Taylor were for chrissakes...although....

Posted: 10/17/05 at 11:25amI may understand how people might not know actors who never became major stars in film or television, but I never understand the phrase "that was before my time", as an excuse for not knowing someone. Films or any recordings, are as current as the moment they are being viewed or listened to. They are only before your time, because you haven't chosen to watch them. If you limit yourself to only watching films that are released in your lifetime, then you are depriving yourself of some wonderful films and performances. I watch more older films than current films, but there are just so many more to see.

Posted: 10/17/05 at 11:27amExactly! That's like saying I don't listen to classical music because that was before my time...Mozart who?

I didn't know who Julie Harris was initially. Until someone on this board directed me to the IMDB and I realized I saw her in EAST OF EDEN and KNOTS LANDING.
Hell, i had no clue Lorna Luft was Liza Minnelli's half-sister and Judy Garland's daughter.
Yes, there are some of us who don't know these things.
That doesn't make us bad people...

Posted: 10/17/05 at 3:45pmThat doesn't make anybody bad, but if you see a name you don't recognize, google them and educate yourself...that's what I do...chances are you're missing something great!
