Posted: 4/11/05 at 8:12pmHey all - I have a question - who do you all consider to be some of the top leading YOUNG women on Broadway these days - like, able to play high school ages?

*waits for stampede of "Idina! Idina! Idina! Idena! Eyedena!"*
Hmm...how about Anna Paquin and Natalie Portman?
Although I suppose technically Natalie hasn't been on Broadway...but if we're talking about theatrical potential...

Posted: 4/11/05 at 8:18pmWasn't Natalie Portman in some Shakespeare in the Park thing a few years ago? My sister saw it and I heard she was awful.

Posted: 4/11/05 at 8:19pmWell, let me be more specific - I'm needing to cast a girl to be the lead character in a musical version of The Lovely Bones. - She is of high school age - must be able to sound young/breathy as well as have a strong belt...just wondering if anyone came to mind for you guys...

Really?
Yeah, she was in Chekhov's The Seagull with an all-star lineup (Glenn Close, Kevin Kline...). I really enjoy her movies - I find her acting very subtle, but I thought she would grace the stage really well.

Wait, you are casting this for Broadway? I'm confused.
And wasn't Natalie in The Diary of Anne Frank?

Some otherwise very worthy actors just can't do Shakespeare and/or period pieces because their way of speaking and carrying themselves is too modern. Portman might have that problem.
And isn't Menzel 30-something? She and Chenoweth were both stretching it in Wicked.

Posted: 4/11/05 at 8:26pmKelli O'Hara has a very young face. She could probably pull it off.

Plum--- Norbert Leo Butz. 'Nuff said.
Let me stew on this for a while, MJR. I love imagining my ideal cast every time I read a book, but I normally think in terms of a film cast and not a Broadway one.

Posted: 4/11/05 at 8:30pmPlaying way too young. Enjoy his singing, but when Fiyero, the impish school boy, showed up on the scene, I was wondering why Galinda's grand-uncle was picking her up from school so early.

How about Anna Pacquin, MJR? She's fantabulous.
And Norbert Leo Butz restored my faith in hip replacement. It's amazing, he moves like a sixty year old now.

Posted: 4/11/05 at 8:37pmWell, Reading Comp, in case you missed it, MJR's looking for someone with a belt, which I don't think Anna has.

Well, her trousers stayed up when I saw her in Roulette.

Posted: 4/11/05 at 8:39pmHas anyone seen Little Women? What about Amy Alexander? She looks the part to me at least...
#22re: Leading YOUNG Ladies
Posted: 4/11/05 at 8:47pmYou obviously haven't seen LITTLE WOMEN. Amy McAlexander can't sing for s*it and her acting is annoying as all hell.

I'd second that.
